Lehigh continues non-league slate with visit to Mount St. Mary's Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh women's basketball team heads back on the road to face their third NEC opponent of the season, this time at Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon at Knott Arena.

After going 0-2 during the Bahamas Hoopfest in Nassau over Thanksgiving, the Mountain Hawks got back to work Tuesday night at Stabler Arena, rolling over Bloomsburg, 91-43 in the non-league home finale.

Lehigh is 6-2 after the first eight games of the year with just two non-league matchups remaining before Patriot League play begins after the new year.

The Mountain Hawks got a glimpse into the future on Tuesday, with a strong performance out of freshman wing Frannie Hottinger, who dropped 16 points and seven rebounds in the best game of her young career so far. Three other players scored in double figures with junior Mariah Sexe (14), senior Paige Galiani (12) and senior Camryn Buhr (11). For both Sexe and Galiani, both of those totals are career-highs as Sexe thrived in her second consecutive start after getting eight against Fordham last weekend.

Lehigh's defense had a strong outing once again, holding the Huskies to just 37.3 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond-the-arc. It also forced 23 Bloomsburg turnovers, the fourth time this year Lehigh has forced an opponent to 20 or more turnovers.

Sunday's matchup at Mount St. Mary's will mark Lehigh's last in nearly two weeks, as the Mountain Hawks will next head to Minnesota on Dec. 21.

Mount St. Mary's enters Sunday's matchup against Lehigh with a 4-3 overall record, most recently taking down Patriot League opponent Loyola on Friday night, 81-75.

The Mountaineers were very efficient from the field, shooting 52 percent (26-for-50), as well as converting on 10 3-pointers for 25 attempts (40 percent).

Kendall Bresee led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting with four 3-pointers in 40 minutes of action. She also grabbed 11 rebounds with three assists and two steals. Four Mountaineers, in addition to Breese, finished in double scoring figures with Jetarrikah Settle (15), Michaela Harrison (12) and Bridget Birkhead (11).

The Mountaineers led by as many as 10 points with 8:40 left in the fourth quarter, but the Greyhounds pulled closer, falling by just six points on the road.

The win is Mount St. Mary's third in row, with previous victories over UMBC and Radford.

Loyola is one of three common opponents for Lehigh and Mount St. Mary's this season, as they also will face NEC opponents Merrimack and CCSU this season.

Today is the 11th meeting all-time between Lehigh and Mount St Mary's.

The Mountaineers were the victors in four of the first five matchups between the two teams, but the Mountain Hawks have gotten the upper hand in the last five games.

Mount St. Mary's has not gotten a winning decision over Lehigh since Jan. 25, 1993, 78-56 final at Stabler Arena.

Sunday's matchup will be streamed live on NEC Front Row and is available through Lehigh's live audio stream on Lehighsports.com with Matt Markus on the call. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. from Emmitsburg.
