Lehigh hosts GW in home opener on Education Day Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The start the Lehigh Women's Basketball team has had is one that they couldn't have asked for any better. The Mountain Hawks are 2-0 to start a season for the second straight year and will look to go 3-0 for the second year in a row when they host George Washington Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. for Education Day at Stabler Arena. The game marks Lehigh's first at home during the 2019-20 season after going 13-5 a year ago on its home court.
The Mountain Hawks have already proven they can compete in an overtime period after earning a hard-fought 72-68 win over Merrimack Saturday afternoon in North Andover, Mass. The win came in a tough environment, the opposing fans watching their team play in the first Division I game played at Merrimack.
Senior Camryn Buhr led the way with a team-high 19 points, going 7-of-14 from the field with eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block including her 1,000th career point from the free throw line with 55 seconds to play in regulation.
Two other Mountain Hawks finished in double-figures including junior Mary Clougherty, who notched a career-high 16 points with four rebounds and four assists and a career-best four 3-pointers. Cameryn Benz added 11 points with seven boards, finishing in double-figures for the second consecutive game.
Lehigh shot 36 percent from the field and 32 percent from downtown in the win, converting on 10 of its 14 free throws.
Through its first two games, Lehigh's depth and play from off the bench has been a key storyline, especially the continued emergence of sophomores Clair Steele and Emma Grothaus and the outstanding offensive play from Clougherty.
Steele played a career-high 28 minutes at Merrimack, scoring seven points and grabbing a career-high seven rebounds with three assists and two steals. Grothaus has accumulated 15 rebounds in her first two games to start the season, getting seven with two points, an assist and a steal against the Warriors as well.
The Mountain Hawks are 7-3 all-time in Education Day games, picking up the 63-48 victory last season on Nov. 13, 2018.
It's last time out, George Washington fell at the hands of Princeton, 75-50 in the home opener in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon.
The Colonials had the lead for most of the first half until the Tigers took over with a 24-9 third quarter, ultimately getting the win.
Freshman Faith Blethen led the way with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers with six rebounds. Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke had her second straight game scoring in double figures with 10 points.
GW's loss follows an opening night, 68-56 victory at Villanova on Nov. 6 that saw the team shoot 43.8 percent from the field while making 28 of its 64 shot attempts.
Four of GW's first five games are on the road with its next home contest set for Nov. 24 vs. crosstown opponent Georgetown.
The Colonials lead the all-time series between the two teams, 1-0, getting a 74-60 win over Lehigh during the 1978 season.
