WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's tennis team ended its fall season this weekend at the ITA Regionals. Sibel Can and Paula Gonzalez were the lone Mountain Hawks to compete.

Having to win qualifying matches to advance to the main draw in singles, Gonzalez won the first match, but then dropped the decisive match for a berth the main draw. In her first match, Gonzalez defeated Army's Caroline Vincent in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-1. The junior then dropped her second match to Yale's Rhea Shrivastava, 6-0, 6-3.

Being already placed in the main draw, Can, a senior from Weston, Florida won her opening round match against Cornell's Maria Adiaconitel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. With the win, Can will go into the records book as it was the first time that a women's tennis player won a main draw match at the fall ITA Regionals. In her next match, Can dropped a close matchup to Columbia's Akanksha Bhan, 7-5, 6-4.

Not only did the two compete in singles, but Can and Gonzalez teamed up for the main draw doubles. In the main draw, the Brown and White pair were edged by a Cornell pair, 8-4.

"Paula and Sibel represented our program with a ton of Lehigh pride at the ITAs," said head coach Sarah Hendrix. "They each gained some very high-quality match experience. I'm very proud of how they both competed.

In all, Lehigh can now turn its focus onto the real season in the spring. The Mountain Hawks saw many positive things in the fall. With strong leadership in Can, Gonzalez and Leigh Friedman, along with experience and talented depth in Casey Zhong, Anshika Singh and Catherine Meighan, while sprinkling in top freshman Junmoke James and Ella imhof, Lehigh will be fun to watch.

With the completion, the women's tennis team will take time to prepare themselves for the regular season. The spring schedule will begin in February.
