Mountain Hawks wrap up fall opener at Navy Day Regatta Saturday

10/12/2019 9:39:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh rowing team opened its fall season on Saturday, competing in the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Mountain Hawks' day was highlighted by the Women's Freshmen Eight, who placed third in its race.

"We had a lot of ups and downs today," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The freshmen did a great job racing today, performing and learning, which was great to see because they're the future of the program. The other crews we had race today initially went out conservatively in the early races then in the afternoon, we didn't perform the way we've been performing in practices, which we have to nail down a whole lot better. That will come with some time and a lot more focus with the work we want to get done."

The Lehigh women raced in pairs in the morning, as six crews competed in the Women's Open 2 to begin the day. The top finishing pairs went into the Varsity Eight in the afternoon.

Along with the women's pairs, the Mountain Hawks competed in six additional races – the Men's Open Fours, Men's Freshmen Eight, Women's Freshmen Eight, Women's JV Eight, Men's Varsity Eight and Women's Varsity Eight.

"The Women's Freshmen Eight finished third in their event and did a great job of taking what we want to teach them and applying it," said Conley. "The Men's Varsity Eight had the biggest turnaround of the day. In the earlier races (in the fours), they didn't race as well, but they were able to put it together in the eights."

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Class Day, set for Saturday, Oct. 26 on the Lehigh River in Allentown.

"We have to keep moving forward," said Conley. "A lot of that will come down to catching the teams in front of us, and being aware of who's in front of us so we understand how to close the gap."
