BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Opening league play with consecutive defeats, the Lehigh women's soccer team returns home on Wednesday night looking to get back on track. The Mountain Hawks are set to host Bucknell at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last season's Patriot League Quarterfinals in which Lehigh picked up a thrilling, last-second win in double overtime. In mid-September, Lehigh enjoyed an impressive weekend in beating UMBC and Saint Joseph's, but followed by dropping league contests the next two Saturdays.
Most recently, Lehigh fell at rival Lafayette 2-0 as the Leopards scored goals in the 39th and 54th minutes to walk away victorious. Junior goalkeeper Miranda Royds made six saves on one end and the Mountain Hawks had a fair share of scoring chances on the other (even outshooting Lafayette 14-11), but it wasn't enough.
Wednesday marks Patriot League contest number three of nine. Even with the tough start, the Mountain Hawks are only two points behind sixth-place Holy Cross and three behind Lafayette and Boston University, who are tied for fourth. This week, Lehigh faces the two only remaining unbeaten teams in Bucknell and Navy, both 2-0-0 in league play.
The Bison are 4-6-0 overall, earning a 2-1 win at Lafayette and 1-0 victory vs. defending champion Boston U. Prior to that, Bucknell had lost two straight – vs. Penn (2-0) and at George Washington (2-1). Against the Terriers, Emilene Parham scored in the 43rd minute to account for the game's only goal, earning her Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. Chloe Christakos and Abby Gearhart are tied for the team lead in points with five (two goals, one assist apiece) while Gabby Bair has scored twice as well. Kaylee Donnelly has started all 10 games in goal, tallying a 0.85 goals against average and 81.4 save percentage. The freshman was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday.
The Bison lead the all-time series with Lehigh, 16-12-3, with the first meeting coming in 1991, a 3-1 Bucknell victory. Lehigh's first win was in 1992 by a 2-0 final. Since 2010, the series is tied 5-5-1. The most recent meeting saw Kayla Arestivo score with two seconds left in double overtime in the 2018 Patriot League Quarterfinals. The last four games in the series have seen a tie, two Lehigh wins and a Bucknell victory. Despite Lehigh's recent success, it has mainly been on the road. Bucknell has won the last three meetings in Bethlehem with Lehigh's last win coming in 2012.
Following Wednesday's game, the Mountain Hawks travel to Navy on Saturday to face the Midshipmen. Opening kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
