BETHLEHEM, Pa – The Lehigh women's basketball team outdueled the Crusaders of Holy Cross at Stabler Arena 64-55 for its third consecutive Patriot League win.
The Mountain Hawks move to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in league play. Holy Cross drops to 8-6 and 0-3 in Patriot League play. This is the first time since the 2014-15 season that Lehigh has begun league play 3-0.
Junior Cameryn Benz and senior Hailey Pascoe were the top scorers for the Mountain Hawks with Benz compiling 12 points on 4-of-13 shooting along with bringing In 12 rebounds. Her 12 rebounds were a career high and helped secured the first double-double of her Lehigh career. Pascoe had 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting along with three assists and four steals.
Benz became the third Mountain Hawk this season to record a double-double along with recording the team's fifth of the season.
"I thought initially we settled for too many three's to begin the game where we could have gone inside more, and Cam did a great job with the opportunities she got," said head coach Sue Troyan. "She did a great job on the boards, she was relentless and that was a key factor as the game went along."
Although pulling away and winning by 11 points, the Mountain Hawks and Crusaders traded blows throughout the night, never letting each other have too much room to breathe.
Lehigh would start the first frame of action riding an 8-4 run that saw junior Camryn Buhr sink the first two baskets for either team to give Lehigh an initial 4-0 run. Freshman Megan Walker would give Lehigh its biggest lead of the quarter with a 3-pointer to put the Mountain Hawks up by six.
Holy Cross wouldn't let the first quarter get away from them, as the Crusaders rattled off five points in the last 1:20.
"We had talked about how good a player Lauren Manis was, and trying to limit her ability to score. When we were struggling in the first half we limited Holy Cross' offense, and I think that's what helped us stay in this game, said Troyan.
Quarter No. 2 would be the only quarter that Lehigh was outscored, and that was just by a lone point. Holy Cross would start off by collecting the first points of the quarter on a layup, with 14 of its 16 points coming in down low in the paint. Lehigh would hold fast, cutting in to every Crusader lead and never letting Holy Cross lead by more than four points as the Mountain Hawks and Crusaders would be tied at 26 going into the half.
Going down by five to start the third, Pascoe would take it upon herself to get Lehigh back on even footing, as she hit a jumper for two before drilling a 3-pointer from the left side to tie the game at 31.
The remainder of the quarter would see the score tied two more times, once with Holy Cross coming by down by four and the other time would feature the Mountain Hawks down by two with freshman Clair Steele sinking a pair of free throws to end the quarter to even the score up at 41 going into the final quarter.
Lehigh would see a resurgence on offense in the final frame, scoring 23 points to fend off the Crusaders. It would be a pair of layups for Lehigh to start the offense, with junior Hannah Hedstrom and Benz converting. Holy Cross would counter with a pair of layups of its own to keep it just a two-point ball game for Lehigh after the first 1:30 of action. After the brief exchange, Lehigh would crank it up a notch, starting with a 3-pointer from Benz to make it a 50-45 game with 5:43 remaining.
Charging to the basket on the right side, Benz would try to finesse a shot in, but would instead come away with a rebound on her own shot, giving her a second chance for two points that would put her into double-double territory.
Lehigh's defense would hold off the Crusaders for the remainder of the quarter, letting up just four points in the remaining 2:41 of the game.
The Mountain Hawks return to the road, as they travel to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to battle the Boston University Terriers at Case Gym on Saturday, January 12. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
