Mountain Hawks Late Rallies Not Enough To Overcome Slow Start - Pascoe Sets New Personal Scoring High

BOSTON, Mass. The Lehigh women's basketball team tasted defeat for the first time to a Patriot League opponent this season as they fell to the Boston University Terriers 58-46 at Case Gym.
Lehigh moves to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in league play while Boston University advances to 8-6 and 4-0 in league play. The Terriers are now the sole undefeated squad in the Patriot League after the win over Lehigh.
The 45 points scored against Boston University is now the lowest point total for the Mountain Hawks this season, with the previous low being 48 points scored against Villanova in the 70-48 loss to the Wildcats.
The Mountain Hawks were led offensively by senior Hailey Pascoe who delivered a career night, scoring a career-high 22 points against the Terriers. Pascoe's previous scoring high was set on January 14, 2017 at Holy Cross when she unleashed 16 points against the Crusaders. Her 22 points also makes her just the second Mountain Hawk to crack the 20 point mark this season, joining junior Cameryn Benz, who holds the season high of 23 points scored in a single game.
The first two quarters were not kind to Lehigh, especially the first, as the Mountain Hawks scored just two points off a layup from Benz to make it a then 9-2 game midway through the first quarter. Before the first quarter against Boston University, the fewest points scored in a quarter was five in the first quarter against Villanova.
Quarter number two would have its problems as well but saw the Mountain Hawks start to claw their way back, scoring eight points this time around. Pascoe would chime in three of those eight points within the first five minutes of play, while Benz and junior Gena Grundhoffer both scored via layups.
"We struggled to put the ball in the basket today and when you're struggling to find your shot it's even harder to make one sometime. We took close to half our shots in the first half from three-point range, and you probably don't want to take as many threes as we did," said head coach Sue Troyan after the game. "That was what Boston University was giving us, they took a lot of room inside and they would always bring in help when we did try to move the ball inside."
Coming out of the break, the Mountain Hawks looked refreshed and reenergize, looking for any opportunity to break through and get within range of the Terriers. Pascoe would be the driving force for the Mountain Hawks in the third frame, driving home nine points. Lehigh would also benefit from multiple trips to the free throw line, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. With the resurgence in scoring for the Brown and White, the Mountain Hawks were able to push the Terriers lead down to single figures twice in the final two minutes of the third quarter. With everything said, this would be the first double-figure scoring quarter for Lehigh, posting up 17 points.Â
"We talked about the importance of being aggressive coming into the third quarter and forcing Boston University into foul trouble since one of their weaknesses is their lack of depth, their starters play the bulk of their minutes," said Troyan.
Pascoe once again put the offense on her back for the fourth quarter, chipping in 10 points in the final frame of action. As a team, it would be another double-figure scoring quarter, with 18 points going towards the Lehigh cause.
"Hailey had a really strong game and played how you'd expect a senior to play. Case Gym is a hard place to play, especially with Boston University undefeated at home so far this season. She did everything you'd expect her to do, stepping up and setting an example of how to play on both ends of the floor in a game like this," said Troyan.
The Mountain Hawks will once again be on the road, as they venture to take on the Bison of Bucknell on January 16 for a 6 p.m. start time.
