BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh takes to the road for the final time during the dual meet season for a pair of duals in the state of Oklahoma. The Mountain Hawks will open their trip Saturday night against Oklahoma in Norman and then will head north to Stillwater on Sunday to battle No. 2 Oklahoma State.
Lehigh moved up two spots to No. 22 in the latest NWCA Top 25 after a 1-1 showing against ranked foes at home last weekend. The Mountain Hawks won the final three bouts, scoring bonus points in all three to knock off then-No. 23 Arizona State 23-13 for their sixth straight dual win. Lehigh then saw that streak snapped a day later with a 23-9 setback against No. 12 Virginia Tech. Freshman Josh Humphreys and sophomore Jordan Wood were the only two Mountain Hawks to go 2-0 in last week's action. Sophomore Chris Weiler delivered the go-ahead fall in Lehigh's win over Arizona State.
The Mountain Hawks' win over No. 23 Arizona State was their sixth straight overall and second this season over a team ranked in the NWCA Top 25. Freshman Josh Humphreys delivered a big boost, scoring a takedown and four point near fall in the final seconds to top Christian Pagdilao 6-1 in a battle of top 20 wrestlers at 157, a win which gave the Mountain Hawks a 9-6 lead at intermission. The Mountain Hawks trailed 13-9 after seven bouts, but won the final three, scoring bonus points in all three to rally for the victory. Senior Ryan Preisch tied the dual at 13-13 with a major decision over Jacen Petersen at 184 and sophomore Chris Weiler gave Lehigh the lead for good, using a cradle to pin Austyn Harris at 6:06. Lehigh has now won its last five duals against Arizona State.
The NCAA released the first of four Coaches' Panel rankings for the 2018-19 season on January 24. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. A panel of coaches ranked the top 33 in each weight class with the Mountain Hawks well represented. Lehigh has wrestlers ranked in the top 33 in eight of 10 weight classes, led by sophomore Jordan Wood, who is ranked fourth at 285. Senior Ryan Preisch and junior Jordan Kutler join Wood in the top 10 in their respective classes.
Lehigh will be making its eighth visit to Norman, Oklahoma and its fifth to Stillwater. The Mountain Hawks have visited Oklahoma twice previously under Pat Santoro, losing a January 2012 dual and winning a convincing 30-7 decision over the Sooners in December 2015. This will be the fourth time that Lehigh hits both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on the same trip with the previous instances coming in January 1986, January 1989 and December 2005. In that 2005 visit, which also marked Lehigh's last trip to Stillwater, 10th-ranked Lehigh lost to the top-ranked Cowboys but the Mountain Hawks tied No. 4 Oklahoma 18-18. Lehigh also visited Oklahoma five years ago when the NCAA Championships were held in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma owns a 5-5 dual meet record. The Sooners dropped a pair of Big 12 duals last weekend on their visit to Iowa, falling 25-6 to Iowa State and 28-9 at Northern Iowa. Oklahoma's fall semester included action at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic and the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. In the new year, the Sooners went 3-1 at the Virginia Duals including wins over ranked squads from Lock Haven and Arizona State. The top Sooner wrestler is Dom Demas, who is ranked 13th by InterMat at 141. Demas is the leader among five Oklahoma wrestlers who appear in the initial NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings. He is joined by Davion Jeffries (149), Justin Thomas (157), Anthony Mantanona (174) and Jake Woodley (197). Lou Rosselli is in his third season as head coach at Oklahoma.
Oklahoma State brings an unblemished 10-0 mark into this weekend's action. The Cowboys will host Northern Iowa Friday night before Lehigh's visit on Sunday. Oklahoma State is coming off a 22-15 win over Iowa State last weekend. Earlier this season the Cowboys won the Reno Tournament of Champions and finished second at the Southern Scuffle. Oklahoma State has a wrestler ranked in all 10 weight classes by InterMat, led by Daton Fix (133) and Derek White (285) who are both ranked second. Nick Piccininni (125), Kaden Gfeller (149) and Joe Smith (174) are also ranked in the top five in their respective weight classes. Oklahoma State has won a NCAA-best 34 national team championships in wrestling and have a Division I-best 142 individual national champions and 462 All-Americans. American wrestling legend John Smith is in his 28th season as head coach at his alma mater.
