Mountain Hawks Use Explosive Third Quarter To Defeat Army
1/26/2019 6:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's basketball team rattled off another impressive victory as it dispatched the Black Knight of Army West Point 73-50 at Christl Arena.
A close game in the first half of action, the Mountain Hawks caught fire in the third quarter, going 77.3 percent from the field along with a 5-for-7 shooting performance from beyond the arc to pull away with the victory.
Lehigh moves to 13-6 overall on the season with the win along with now owning a 5-3 Patriot League record. Army West Point drops to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in league play with the loss.
The Mountain Hawks saw four players reach double figures in scoring against the Black Knights, with junior Camryn Buhr leading the charge with 15 points on the afternoon. Senior Hailey Pascoe (11), freshman Meagan Walker (11) and Emma Grothaus (10) joined Buhr in double figures in scoring.
Junior Cameryn Benz set a new career high in rebounding, drawing in 15 in total, besting the 12 she brought in against Holy Cross on January 9 this year.
"I thought in the first half we were getting good looks, but we weren't able to get anything to fall," said head coach Sue Troyan. "I thought we can out very focused and with lots of energy. We made some changes offensively and defensively, and I thought we took advantage of what Army was giving us."
A back and forth first quarter saw the Mountain Hawks strike quickly as junior Gena Grundhoffer got the scoring underway with a jumper 50 second into the contest. Lehigh continued to stay strong for the early portion of the first, featuring a four-point lead after a Benz 3-pointer close to the midway point to make it 7-4. Both squads kept it close, as it looked like the Mountain Hawks would take a slim one-point lead into the second quarter after a baseline run and layup from Grothaus spun off the iron and fell in to make it a 15-14 game. That would not be the case, as Army saw Madison Hovren drop in a layup with one second left on the clock to give the Black Knights the slim advantage.
The second frame wouldn't go the same as the first, with the Mountain Hawks being held to nine points while Army scored 14. The Black Knights would get off to a hot start in the second frame, using an initial 6-3 to gain separation. With the exception of an early 3-pointer from Walker, Buhr would be the primary source of scoring for the Mountain Hawks, including a late jumper with four seconds left to pull Lehigh within six at the half.
The Mountain Hawks were not to be messed with in the third quarter, scoring the first six points of the frame with jumpers Benz and Buhr for a 6-0 run not even two minutes into the quarter. After an Army layup to break up the initial run, Lehigh responded with three consecutive 3-pointers from Grundhoffer, Walker and Pascoe.
Pascoe, who came into today's game against Army with 99 career made 3-pointers became the ninth person in Lehigh women's basketball history to record at least 100 3-pointers in their career.
After the bevy of 3-pointers, The Mountain Hawks lead was pushed up to seven before a 15-5 run to end the third made it a 12-point game with Lehigh firmly in control 52-40 before the final quarter of action.
Fifteen of the 28 points scored in the third quarter for Lehigh came via 3-points along with a 62.5 shooting percentage from the field.
Not wanting the third act to be their best performance, the Mountain Hawks took it one notch higher in the fourth, scoring 21 points while going a percent 6-for-6 from beyond the arc while shooting 77.8 from the field to in the final quarter of action.
An even beginning, Lehigh would continue to thrive off the outside shooting, hitting its first three baskets from beyond the arc to keep pace with an Army squad looking to get back into the contest. After trading baskets for the first four minutes of the quarter, Lehigh would close out the game on a 9-2 run that featured freshman Katie Rice's first career made 3-pointer.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on January 30 as they begin a four-game homestand with the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds coming to Stabler Arena for a 6 p.m. start.
