Mountain Hawks Return To Form With An Impressive Showing Against Colgate

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team had a strong showing as it defeated the Colgate Raiders 86-58 at Stabler Arena to stop a three-game losing skid.
Lehigh advances to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in Patriot League play while Colgate drops to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in league play.
In a return to form for the Mountain Hawks, the Brown and White secured just the second 80-plus point scoring night this season behind junior Gena Grundhoffer's season-high 18 points. Along with Grundhoffer, Lehigh saw three other players reach double figures in scoring as junior Camryn Buhr (15), junior Cameryn Benz (11) and freshman Emma Grothaus (10) all scored 10 or more points. This is just the fourth time all season that Lehigh has had four players reach double figures in scoring.
Known for their dominant starts for the majority of the season, Lehigh imposed its will against the Raiders, scoring 23 points in the first quarter and notched the seventh game this season that the Mountain Hawks have not trailed their opponent.
"It was important to set the tone. We've had some trouble dictating the first quarter the past couple games. You look back to the beginning of the season, and we were really good when we were able to set the tone and tempo in the first quarter. Hopefully we've found ourselves after a performance like this," said head coach Sue Troyan.
Lehigh took off with an 8-2 run to initially start the game, as Buhr, Grundhoffer, Pascoe and Benz all scored in the first three and a half minutes of play. Pascoe would also hit her lone 3-pointer of the game in the first, bringing her career total to 99 made 3's. Pascoe is now ninth all-time in Lehigh women's basketball history for 3-pointers made.
Quarter No. 2 was yet another show of force from Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawks scored 21 points in the second frame. Among those 21 points, Grundhoffer would put away six of her 18 points in the second quarter. Going into the half, Lehigh would hold a 20-point advantage at 44-24.
The third quarter would prove to be a spark for the Raiders, as the visitors would score 25 points along with going 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Mackenzie Carroll would drop four of those six 3-pointers to help Colgate pull within 15 going into the fourth. Although letting up 25, Lehigh didn't let the quarter get away from them, responding with 21 of its own.
Colgate would not have another chance to run the tables, as the Raiders were shut down in the fourth quarter, only scoring nine points due to the shut-down defense from Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks also held the Raiders to a shooting percentage of 22.2 percent from the field in the fourth while going 7-for-16 shooting as Lehigh would have its fourth 20+ scoring quarter of the game. It also marks the first time this season that Lehigh has scored 20 or more points in all four quarters.
The Mountain Hawks will venture to West Point, N.Y to take on the Black Knights on Saturday, January 26, with game time set for 1 p.m. After Army, Lehigh will return home for a four-game home stand, starting with a visit from Loyola (Md.) on January 30.
