Mountain Hawks Fall In Close Game To American
1/19/2019 6:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's basketball team fought valiantly against the American Eagles at Stabler Arena only to suffer its third straight Patriot League loss, falling 61-53 on the tail end of a doubleheader that featured the men squaring off with the Bucknell Bison earlier in the day.
Lehigh is now 11-6 overall this season with an even 3-3 league record while American advances to 9-8 overall and now holds a 5-1 record in league play.
Junior Camryn Buhr was the leading scorer for the Mountain Hawks, chipping in 10 points on the day. Freshman Megan Walker was one-point shy of tying Buhr, as she finished with nine points.
"I thought on the defensive end we played consistently, and this was a game that had two teams similar in what they do on the defensive end. On the offensive end, we were inconsistent at times, there were too many turnovers and not the best fourth quarter with our shooting," said head coach Sue Troyan.
After a pair of slow and sluggish first quartera in its past two contests, Lehigh was able to break the trend and come out scoring 14 points. In a game heavy with 3-pointers, the Mountain Hawks started the first with back-to-back 3-pointers from junior Gena Grundhoffer and Buhr.
Lehigh and American would trade blows for the majority of the first stanza, with the score tied a total of four times. One of those lead changes for Lehigh came from a Walker layup to put Lehigh up by two. That two-point lead would be the last time the Brown and White would lead the Eagles.
Following the layup, American would push forward with an 8-0 run to end the first frame of action.
"We talked about getting a stronger start to the game, and I thought we had a stronger start here against American. We've stressed getting out strong on both ends of the floor and taking shots that are within our systems along with their comfort range," said Troyan.
Although ending the quarter down by seven, the Mountain Hawks would hold pace with the Eagles, relying on their outside shooting. Making eight 3-pointers on the day, Lehigh would drain four of them in the second quarter, going 5-of-17 in total from the field.
Junior Cameryn Benz got off to a hot start, scoring five of the first eight points for Lehigh off a layup and a 3-pointer. The closest Lehigh would get to regaining the lead came off a trey from senior Hailey Pascoe who drain a shot from the top of the key to make it a two-point affair.
Pascoe, who now has 98 career made 3-pointers, is now tied for ninth in all-time 3-pointers made with former Mountain Hawks and current Director of Basketball Operations Bernadette Devaney. Pascoe is looking to become just the ninth Lehigh women's basketball player to record 100 3-pointers in their career.
The third quarter would be the sole quarter of the game that the Mountain Hawks were able to outscore the Eagles, with the Brown and White scoring 16 compared to the 11 from American. Free throws were also important in winning the quarter, with close to half of the points scored (7) came from the charity stripe.
After letting up the first two points of the quarter, Lehigh would get six straight points off of a pair of Buhr free throws, a layup from junior Hannah Hedstrom and a mid-range jumper from Pascoe. After a 3-pointer from American, it would be another run for the Brown and White, which saw the Mountain Hawks close out the quarter on a 10-5 stretch that included freshman Emma Grothaus supplying four of those points off a layup and converting a pair of free throws.
The fourth quarter would not go as the Mountain Hawks probably had planned, with only nine points being scored for the Brown and White. Walker supplied five of the nine points in the final frame including a late 3-pointer from left side corner to briefly make it a two-point game with six minutes remaining.
The Mountain Hawks can make their nest at Stabler Arena once more, as they host Colgate next Wednesday for a 6 p.m. start.
