BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing without starting goalkeeper Paige Innarella due to injury, the Lehigh field hockey team and Bucknell were scoreless midway through the first half and down by just one at the half, but a second-half surge led the Bison to a 5-1 win on Saturday. Trailing 4-0 late, the Mountain Hawks wouldn't quit, turning their first and only penalty corner of the game into a goal, scored by sophomore Lenke Havas following a succession of passes. Lehigh will look to bounce back on Sunday when it travels to LIU Brooklyn to face the Blackbirds.
Â
"The team did a great job of coming out Wednesday and it was probably the best practice that we've had all season, making sure we were really challenging each other and holding ourselves to high standards," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Today, we did a nice job in the midfield of trying to hold a really talented Bucknell team from getting into the circle. In the first half, we were successful at that, more so than we were in the second half. We broke down quite a bit and there were moments of frustration that we allowed to impact our game."
Â
The Mountain Hawks were outshot 10-2 in the first half, but both shots were on goal – by seniors Lauren Dice and Isabel McKeown. In her first-collegiate game, sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Brabender stopped the first two shots sent her way before Bucknell opened a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Â
The Bison went on a 3-0 surge in the second half, all coming in the span of 8:25 to take a 4-0 advantage at exactly the 47:00 mark. However, Lehigh got on the board just over 10 minutes later at 57:45 as freshman Leah Mullery assisted on Havas' third goal of the season off a penalty corner.
Â
Bucknell added a late goal, directly after new goalkeeper, sophomore Madeline Major made three successive saves. She couldn't stop the fourth as the Bison took a 5-1 lead, which proved to be the final.
Â
Final shots were 24-7 in favor of Bucknell while shots on goal were 14-5 Bison. Bucknell held an 11-1 edge in penalty corners. Brabender stopped three of five shots sent her way over the first 42:33 before Major tallied five saves, allowing three goals over the final 27:27.
Â
"We had two new goalkeepers in today and I think they did a really nice job," said Dallmeyer. "One of the things that's really great about coaching this team is their desire to work hard for each other and to step into roles they might be unfamiliar with, in hopes that it's going to help the team. They did a great job this week of being focused. They came out today and made some great saves, working on their voices and a couple positioning things. I anticipate they will continue to thrive moving forward."

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to LIU Brooklyn to face the Blackbirds at 1 p.m.
