BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team returns to action this weekend when it hosts Bucknell on Saturday (11 a.m.) before heading to LIU Brooklyn on Sunday (1 p.m.). The Mountain Hawks dropped both games last weekend, showing plenty of strong signs along the way. Lehigh fell at archrival Lafayette in overtime before dropping the final game of its five-game road trip on Sunday at defending MAAC Champion Fairfield.
In last Friday's game, Lehigh scored two second-half goals in the span of 3:10 to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, marking the first time the Mountain Hawks scored multiple goals vs. the Leopards since Oct. 6, 2017 (13 games ago). Lafayette scored the game-winning goal 20 seconds into overtime, but the Mountain Hawks still took the Leopards to OT for a second straight year, standing tied (or leading) Lafayette in consecutive years for just the third time in the last two decades. In head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer's three years, the Mountain Hawks have been outscored 5-4 by Lafayette. Lehigh had just three goals over the previous 10 games vs. Lafayette before her arrival (being outscored 43-3 in that span).
The Mountain Hawks followed on Sunday by struggling early in each half at Fairfield, but Lehigh responded well, especially in the second half. The Mountain Hawks did not allow a single shot for the game's final 26:58 while generating a number of quality chances themselves. Two days after scoring the game-tying goal at Lafayette, Lenke Havas tallied a defensive save as the 2017 second team All-Patriot League honoree continues her strong sophomore season.
Bucknell stands 4-3 on the season, 1-0 in Patriot League play following a 6-0 win at Colgate. The Bison followed by dropping a nonleague matchup at No. 12 Syracuse, 3-0. Lexi Quick leads Bucknell in assists (5) and points (11) while Brittany Willwerth has 10 points (four goals, two assists) and Nicole Rupnik owns nine (four goals, one assist). Sally Olson leads the team with two defensive saves. Olivia Harris has played every minute in goal, recording a 1.52 goals against average and 0.738 save percentage.
The all-time series against Bucknell is tied 21-21-1 with the Bison winning six straight. Lehigh's last win was a 1-0 home win in 2011.
LIU Brooklyn is 1-7 on the season entering a Friday matchup against Lock Haven. In their third season as a Division I program, the Blackbirds defeated Holy Cross last Friday, 2-1. After going winless in 2015, LIU Brooklyn went 4-14 last season, including 4-2 in the MAAC to earn a spot in the conference tournament. So far this year, Eva Van Wakeren leads the team in points with seven (three goals, one assist) while Madi Cook and Lauren Alburg each own two goals and four points. Molly Jannell has started all eight games in goal, owning a 4.15 GAA and 0.673 save percentage.
Lehigh is 1-0 all-time vs. LIU Brooklyn, beating the Blackbirds 1-0 in last year's season opener as Havas scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute.
Following this weekend, the Mountain Hawks head to our nation's capital to face American on Saturday (Sept. 29) and Georgetown on Sunday (Sept. 30).
