FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Lehigh field hockey team wrapped up its weekend on Sunday by dropping a 5-0 final at reigning MAAC Champion Fairfield. The Mountain Hawks fell victim to goals early in each half as all five of the Stags' scores came within the first 15:39 of the first and second stanzas. From there, the Mountain Hawks held Fairfield scoreless for the final 19+ minutes of each half, regrouping and creating more quality chances of their own. Lehigh did not allow a single shot in the game's final 26:58.
Â
"One of the biggest challenges with rebuilding a program is the inconsistencies that come. So far this year, we've been really steady in continually putting out our best performances and building on that, but we had a little bit of a setback today," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "This was not a great performance from us. We really struggled in the first 45 minutes of the game to gain momentum and be able to get any attacking plays moving forward. We were on defense for the majority of the time and we really struggled to make some of the plays we've been able to make until this point."
Â
The Stags quickly took a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 4:22 mark, adding to their advantage with goals at 9:05 and 15:39. From there, Lehigh's defense allowed just three shots over the final 19:21 of the stanza, only one on goal, which junior goalkeeper Paige Innarella handled to keep the margin at three at the half.

Fairfield began the second half with two goals in the first 6:39 to open a 5-0 advantage, posting six shots within that span. From that point forward, the Mountain Hawks outshot the Stags 4-1 over the game's final 28:21 as Lehigh did not allow a single shot over the final 26:58. On the other end, sophomore Lenke Havas posted Lehigh's next three shots while senior Lauren Dice had a strong opportunity near the goalkeeper in the 68th minute, but her shot just missed the right side of the cage.
Â
Final shots were 16-7 in favor of Fairfield while the Stags held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners. Innarella tallied four saves across the Stags' Caitlin Gilligan, who recorded two. Havas added a defensive save.
Â
"We made a lot of adjustments live while the game was happening," said Dallmeyer. "We made some really big positional changes to try and get the momentum back and in the end, we made one big change in putting Lindsay Alvarez in the center back spot. She was a great leader today and did a really nice job taking over with her voice and dictating the play. That's one of the things we've been missing on this team thus far, so I'm really proud of her for being able to step into an unfamiliar role and capitalize on an opportunity."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return home, and return to Patriot League play on Saturday when they host Bucknell at 11 a.m. Lehigh then heads to LIU Brooklyn next Sunday (Sept. 23) to face the Blackbirds at 1 p.m.
