Lehigh drops 2-1 final to Sacred Heart despite steady offensive pressure

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team fired the first nine shots of the game, five of which were on goal, but Sacred Heart put home its second shot of the contest and went on to down the Mountain Hawks, 2-1 on Sunday. Trailing 2-0 with less than four minutes remaining, sophomore Lenke Havas scored Lehigh's first goal of the season, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't pull any closer.
Â
An action-packed game saw nine combined cards assessed, five to Sacred Heart and four to Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks finished with 15 penalty corners, their most since recording 16 on Oct. 2, 2016 against Siena.
Â
"I was really happy with our first half," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We did really well at making big adjustments from our game Friday so that we were attacking. Our midfield did a much better of making big plays, intercepts and having some better passes. I thought we did a great job dominating. We let in an unfortunate goal early on and we didn't let it change our momentum, which was great. Going into the second half, it was a much different game. We worked hard, but weren't smart."
Â
Among Lehigh's first nine shots was a succession of three straight in the matter of seconds, one from freshman Olivia Perrone and two from sophomore Anna Mostoller, but Sacred Heart goalkeeper Hailey Power stood tall. Perrone finished the game with nine shots, eight on goal.
Â
Midway through the first half, the Pioneers turned their second penalty corner into the game's first goal as Emily Alexis made a move then fed back to Colleen McAninley, who finished at the 16:24 mark.

Lehigh responded with three of the final four first-half shots, all from Perrone and all on goal, but Power made the stops.
Â
The Mountain Hawks continued the pressure early in the second and nearly pulled even in the 40th minute. Perrone's shot off a corner got behind the goalkeeper, but defender Marlena Koellner made an impressive defensive save to keep her team in front.
Â
Later in the half, Sacred Heart turned on the pressure with Lehigh two players short due to yellow cards, firing six straight shots in less than five minutes. The Mountain Hawks returned to full strength unscathed, but Sacred Heart added insurance less than two minutes later on a rebound attempt.
Â
In the 67th minute, Lehigh cut the deficit in half. Off a penalty corner, Havas made a quick move then fired a low shot past Power to pull within 2-1. The Mountain Hawks did have one more shot, and penalty corner, over the final minutes, but couldn't net the equalizer.
Â
Final shots were 19-11 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 15-8 edge in penalty corners. Junior Paige Innarella made three saves in goal while Power had 11.
"Moving forward, we definitely need to work on being more disciplined so we don't get those cards," said Dallmeyer. "They were deserved, we knew they were coming, and we didn't do much to adjust. We need to watch some film and figure out our positioning on attack. We also need to make some adjustments with the fast breaks; they caught us on quite a few times in the midfield."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday at Villanova. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.
