BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team will hit the road for the first time this season when it travels to Villanova on Sunday. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a pair of hard-fought defeats in their opening weekend, falling to Lock Haven (1-0) and Sacred Heart (2-1). Sunday will mark the first meeting between Lehigh and Villanova since 2009.

Despite the two defeats, the Mountain Hawks showed plenty of strong signs over the weekend, allowing just three goals over the two games. In the end, Lehigh was within a single goal in each of its first two games of the year for the first time since 2012, marking only the second time it happened since 2003. The Mountain Hawks were outshot 23-6 against Lock Haven, but junior goalkeeper Paige Innarella made a career-high 14 saves while senior Isabel McKeown added a defensive stop. Lehigh didn't have a big quantity of offensive opportunities, but most were quality scoring chances.

Then on Sunday vs. Sacred Heart, Lehigh dominated possession, especially early. The Mountain Hawks fired the first nine shots of the game and finished with a 19-11 edge in shots for the contest. Sophomore Lenke Havas scored Lehigh's first goal of the season with 3:34 remaining, giving the Mountain Hawks a chance down the stretch, but they couldn't net the equalizer.

Through the opening weekend, the Mountain Hawks find themselves near the top of many statistical categories. After posting nine shots (eight on goal) Sunday, freshman Olivia Perrone stands first in the Patriot League in shots per game (5.0) and second in total shots (10). Innarella stands second in saves (17) and save percentage (0.850) and third in goals against average (1.50).

Villanova is 0-1 heading into the weekend, falling at Fairfield (3-1) and will host Indiana on Friday. Lydia Sydnor scored the Wildcats' goal in the 18th minute to pull within 2-1, but that's as close as they would come. Villanova was picked seventh in the Big East preseason poll. Last season, the Wildcats were 7-10 overall, 3-4 in the Big East.

Villanova leads the all-time series, 14-10. The Wildcats have won 13 straight, with Lehigh's last win coming in 1988 by a 1-0 final. The teams haven't played since 2009.

Following Sunday's game, the Mountain Hawks continue their five-game road trip next weekend, when they face Ball State on Saturday (Sept. 8) and Ohio State on Sunday (Sept. 9), both played on the campus of Ohio State University.
