VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team jumped out to a 2-1 lead just over nine minutes into the game, but Villanova used a 6-0 run through the middle stages to defeat the Mountain Hawks, 7-3 on Sunday. Freshman Leah Mullery led Lehigh's offensive effort, scoring her first two career goals while senior Lauren Dice scored her first goal of the season.
Â
Lehigh's three goals marked a season high after scoring once over two games last weekend. Lehigh has now scored four goals in its last 73:34 of action.
Â
"We were happy to capitalize in the circle today, which is something we struggled with last weekend," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. We made great adjustments to our attacking corners and were able to come up with several intercepts off our attacking press, which resulted in goal scoring opportunities. Leah had a great performance in front of the net, finishing for two goals and creating a penalty stroke opportunity off a fast break. Defensively, we struggled all over the field and mentally, we had lapses that really hurt our ability to stay composed."
Â
The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 4:41 in as Dice put home a penalty stroke for her first goal of the season.
Â
Villanova scored the equalizer less than a minute later, but the Mountain Hawks retook a 2-1 lead at the 9:09 mark following Mullery's first-career goal. The Wildcats pulled even once again at the 17:38 mark, sparking a six-goal run to take a 7-2 lead at the 58:06 mark.
Â
However, Mullery rounded out the scoring at 63:32 to account for the 7-3 final.
Â
Final stats were 27-11 in favor of Villanova while the Wildcats held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Paige Innarella tallied eight saves for the Mountain Hawks. Sophomore Lenke Havas had a defensive save, while also assisting on Lehigh's final goal. Senior Isabel McKeown added a second-half defensive save as well.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will continue their five-game road trip next weekend, when they face Ball State on Saturday (Sept. 8) and Ohio State on Sunday (Sept. 9), both played on the campus of Ohio State University.
