BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team is set to head west this weekend when it travels to Columbus, Ohio to face Ball State Saturday (12 p.m.) and No. 22 Ohio State Sunday (1 p.m.). Both games will be played on the campus of Ohio State University. Despite beginning the season 0-3, the first three games have featured plenty of highlight moments. Lehigh's defense shined over the first two games, while the offense stepped up on Sunday at Villanova. This weekend will serve as Lehigh's final tune-up until its Patriot League opener on Friday, Sept. 14 at Lafayette.
Â
Freshman Leah Mullery helped lead the offense on Sunday, scoring her first two career goals while helping create a penalty stroke, which senior Lauren Dice converted at the 4:41 mark. A wild beginning saw three goals scored in the game's first 9:09 as Mullery's first-career goal gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead less than 10 minutes in. The Nanticoke, Pa. native went on to score another in the 64th minute, helping her earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors.
Â
Through three games, a number of Mountain Hawks stand among the Patriot League statistical leaders. Senior Isabel McKeown is tied for first in the league in defensive saves with two, following her second at Villanova Sunday. Sophomore Lenke Havas also had one earlier in the game. McKeown and Havas have combined for three of the seven defensive saves in the entire league this season. In addition, Mullery is now third in the Patriot League in goals per game (0.67) while classmate Olivia Perrone, along with junior Paige Innarella, are among the statistical leaders as well.
Â
Ball State is 0-4 on the season heading into a Friday matchup against Ohio State. The Cardinals have struggled offensively so far, scoring just two goals – scored by Abby Ferenczy and Sierra Jefferson. Ball State's defeats have come to Saint Francis Pa. (4-0), Indiana (2-0), Dartmouth (5-1) and Iowa (7-1). Grace Chavez has played every minute in goal, owning a 5.79 goals against average and 0.617 save percentage.
Â
Ball State's 2-1 win last year gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead in the all-time series. Amanda Boyer gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 first-half lead, but Ball State scored in the 69th minute to pull even, then scored 9:17 into overtime for the win. Lehigh won the first-ever meeting between the two sides, 5-1 in 1984.
Â
Meanwhile, Ohio State is 2-2 on the young campaign, coming off a 4-2 win at No. 19 Boston University. Casey Cole scored twice in the game to help the Buckeyes to victory. Ohio State also won at Louisville while falling at home to Delaware and against Maine. Esther Clotet and Sammy Stone each lead the team in points with six (two goals, two assists apiece). Aaliyah Hernandez has seen the majority of time in goal, recording a 1.66 GAA and 0.706 save percentage.
Â
The all-time series between Lehigh and Ohio State is tied at one following the Buckeyes' 4-0 win in Bethlehem last year. Lehigh won the first-ever meeting in 1988, also a 4-0 final.
