Mountain Hawks score final two goals to beat Ball State for first time in 34 years

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ball State scored just 1:08 into the second half, but the Lehigh field hockey team put forth a valiant response, scoring the equalizer just 2:51 later before netting the game-winner at the 53:50 mark to win, 2-1 on Saturday. A pair of first-years scored the Mountain Hawks' two goals as Leah Mullery recorded her third goal in the last two games before Olivia Perrone tallied her first-career goal. The win is Lehigh's first of the season and marks the program's first against Ball State since 1984.
Â
"One of the best things about rebuilding are the pivotal moments when you see things come together and it results in historical moments for the program," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "Beating a team that the program hasn't beaten since 1984 is not just a team win, but also a generational win for the program."
Â
The win came on the campus of Ohio State University. A scoreless first half quickly opened up early in the second. The Mountain Hawks have now scored six goals over the last 143:34 of game action.
Â
"I applaud this team for the level of focus they brought to practice this week," said Dallmeyer. "They arrived to 6:30 a.m. practices focused and well-rested, and spent extra time on the field to take more reps so they could be prepared for Ball State's attacking corners. Hard work, a commitment to high standards and a never-settle attitude throughout the week is what won us this game."
Â
Ball State outshot Lehigh 5-3 in the first half, but all three Mountain Hawk shots were on goal, compared to two for the Cardinals.
Â
Ball State broke the ice at the 36:08 mark off a penalty corner, but Lehigh quickly answered. Off a corner of its own, Mullery made a tip in front of the cage on a Lenke Havas feed to pull even at one.
Â
"Leah has been impressive in front of the net," said Dallmeyer. "We have struggled to run corners with any tipping options in the past and for her to be able to execute two in back-to-back games is fantastic."
Â
From there, the sides combined for just two shots over the next 14:53, both by Perrone and the second finding the back of the cage at the 53:50 mark. Perrone carried from the midfield and scored her first-career goal to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
Â
The Mountain Hawks allowed just one shot the rest of the way, none on goal. Lehigh didn't allow a shot on goal for the game's final 33:52.
Â
"Olivia has great on-ball abilities," said Dallmeyer. "She makes great decisions and her quick restarts and ability to see the field moving forward has greatly impacted our attack. She had the opportunity to score earlier in the game and missed the opportunity. We discussed an adjustment on the fly in game play and the next time she had the same situation unfold, she nailed it."
Â
Final shots were7-6 in favor of Ball State while the Mountain Hawks held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners. Innarella finished with two saves for the win.
Â
Â
The Mountain Hawks will continue their road swing on Sunday when they face No. 22 Ohio State at 1 p.m. on BTN Plus.
