BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a historic season and impressive career, senior Julianna Malachin of the Lehigh women's rowing team has been named second team All-Patriot League, as announced on Monday. Now a two-time All-League honoree (after also garnering second-team laurels last season), Malachin wrapped up her career at Friday's Patriot League Championship. For a second straight season, the Mountain Hawks posted their best-ever finish at the championship as Malachin has helped the Lehigh rowing program reach new heights.
Â
Malachin rowed in the six seat of the Varsity Eight during Friday's Patriot League Championship, helping the V8 reach the grand final in back-to-back years for the first time in school history. The Varsity Eight finished second in its heat with a time of 6:48.184, which marked the third-fastest time across both heats. The crew went on to place sixth in a very competitive grand final, recording a time of 6:35.785, which was less than 10 seconds behind third-place Bucknell.
Â
The Varsity Eight enjoyed impressive success all season, reaching the grand final at the Kerr Cup after finishing second in its heat, which included finishing ahead of regional power Drexel. The Varsity Eight came in first at the River Cup, beating archrival Lafayette along with Mercyhurst and Jefferson. The V8 also finished second in the petite final at the Murphy Cup.
Â
Malachin recently received the Mary O'Hurley Leadership Award at Lehigh Athletics' Convocation, given to the department's top graduating female leader. A CRCA first team All-Region honoree as a junior, Malachin is a two-time team captain who played a key role in the transformation of the Lehigh rowing program to where it is today. The Mountain Hawks were regionally-ranked by the NCAA for the first time in program history, finishing tied for fourth place overall with 33 points at Friday's Patriot League Championship. Lehigh entered the final race of the day just two points behind Navy for first.
