BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off its most dominant Patriot League victory since 2015 and largest league-opening win since 1998, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team will return home on Saturday to host Colgate in a big early-season matchup. Opening faceoff is now set for 2 p.m. to allow for extra time to clear the field and complex following Friday snow. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 15-4 win over Holy Cross last Saturday, jumping out to a 9-1 lead and cruising the rest of the way to improve to 3-1 on the season.

With its impressive win, Lehigh is receiving votes in both the national coaches and media polls for the first time this season. Junior Lucas Spence led the offense against the Crusaders, shattering previous career highs in goals (6), points (7) and groundballs (4). He scored Lehigh's second and third goals of the afternoon to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 lead after one quarter of play. After a Holy Cross goal, Lehigh scored the next six to erase much doubt. Junior Andrew Pettit also posted seven points, tying his previous career high set last season at Holy Cross. Pettit finished the afternoon with two goals and five assists. Classmate Tristan Rai tallied two goals and one assist to reach exactly 100 career points.

Five other Mountain Hawks scored a goal, including the first-career goals from sophomore Crew Cintron and freshman Teddy Leggett and first goals of the season from juniors Craig Chick and Jackson Monnin.  Leggett led the defense with a career-high four caused turnovers while Chick tallied five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Junior Eddie Bouhall had five groundballs and two caused turnovers. Senior J.J. Foley also tied career highs in groundballs (2) and caused turnovers (1) while freshman Matt Douglas tallied his first two career caused turnovers and sophomore Christian McHugh posted a career-high two groundballs.

Sophomore Conor Gaffney won 10 of his first 11 in the faceoff circle and finished 12-of-19 with eight groundballs. Freshman James Spence was stellar in goal, stopping 7-of-9 shots sent his way over the first three quarters. Sophomore Colin Kirst entered to begin the fourth and made three saves, allowing two goals, while junior Chris Kiernan played the final 1:01 and made a save.

Lehigh's four goals allowed marked its fewest allowed since last season's 21-4 season-opening win over NJIT. It marked the Mountain Hawks' fewest allowed in a Patriot League game since a 20-4 win over Holy Cross on Mar. 29, 2014. Lehigh improved to 7-1 over its last eight league openers, avenging a Patriot League opening defeat at Holy Cross last season. The Mountain Hawks are now 19-9 all-time in league openers and 27-1 all-time against the Crusaders.

The Mountain Hawks will be facing a Colgate team that is off to a strong start, also standing 3-1, but 0-1 in Patriot League play following a 13-10 loss to Bucknell. Prior to that defeat, the Raiders entered the national rankings after a 14-11 win vs. Cornell. Despite last week's loss, the Raiders still stand third nationally in scoring offense, averaging 15.75 goals per contest.

Colgate is 3-1 on the season, earning wins at Marist (18-12), vs. Binghamton (21-7) and against Cornell (14-11) before dropping its Patriot League opener at home vs. Bucknell (13-10). The story of the Raiders so far is their offense as they average 15.75 goals per game - third nationally. Freshman Mike Hawkins leads the offense in goals (15) and points (19). Sam Cleveland has tallied 11 points (two goals, team-leading nine assists) and Griffin Brown owns 10 (nine goals, one assist). Will Blumenberg leads the way in groundballs (20) while Nick Salameda owns a team-leading five caused turnovers. Collin Orr has been strong in the faceoff circle, winning 62 percent (62-of-100) with 15 groundballs. A pair of goaltenders have each started two games, led by Cyrus Scott, who has tallied a 10.40 goals against average and 0.447 save percentage.

Lehigh has won six of its last seven meetings against the Raiders dating back to the 2012 Patriot League Championship Game when the Mountain Hawks won, 16-14. Since, Lehigh won 13-10 (Apr. 6, 2013), 15-7 (Apr. 26, 2013), 11-7 (Apr. 5, 2014), 12-9 (Mar. 5, 2016) and 11-5 (Mar. 5, 2017). The only loss came at Colgate on Apr. 4, 2015, a 12-8 Raiders' victory. Lehigh has won three straight at home vs. Colgate. The schools first met in 1956, a 16-0 Colgate victory. Lehigh's first win was in 1960 by an 8-6 final.

The Mountain Hawks hit the road next Saturday for another big Patriot League contest, at No. 13/14 Army West Point. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m.
