No. 21 Lehigh drops duals to two top 10 foes on day one of South Beach Duals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 21 Lehigh had four returning NCAA qualifiers make their season dual debuts, but the Mountain Hawks came up on the short end of dual to two top 10-ranked opponents Saturday on day one of the South Beach Duals. The Mountain Hawks started the day with a 25-9 loss to No. 9 Minnesota before falling to No. 6 Missouri by a 21-12 score.

Senior Ryan Preisch was the lone Mountain Hawk to go 2-0 on the day, with two wins by decision in his first dual action of the season.

"We didn't finish positions," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "We had some takedowns that were easy finishes that we didn't finish. It could be a lack of mat time, but we just weren't sharp. We got four guys back but it wasn't what we were hoping they'd look like. We have some work to do and we have to regroup for tomorrow."

In Saturday's first dual, Minnesota won the first four bouts to claim an early 16-0 lead. Freshman Jaret Lane made his dual debut for the Mountain Hawks, dropping a 20-9 major decision to sixth-ranked Sean Russell at 125. After sophomore Brandon Paetzell held eighth-ranked Ethan Lizak to a 7-0 decision at 133, Minnesota's fifth-ranked Mitch McKee broke things open for the Golden Gophers, catching sophomore Luke Karam in a scramble for a first period pin at 141. Senior Cortlandt Schuyler made his season dual debut at 149 but dropped a 7-3 decision to Tommy Thorn.

Freshman Josh Humphreys put Lehigh on the board with a 5-3 win over 11th-ranked Steve Bleise at 157. Humphreys rode out the second period and added a third period escape and takedown, plus riding time to erase an early 2-1 deficit.

Senior Gordon Wolf made his dual debut at 165 and lost a back-and-forth match to Carson Brolsma 10-8 as the Golden Gopher stormed back with two third period takedowns.

Lehigh claimed the next two bouts, as junior Jordan Kutler beat Devin Skatzka 7-3 in a battle of ranked men at 174 and Preisch built a 5-0 lead over Brandon Krone, before holding on 5-3.

At 197, sophomore Jake Jakobsen met Rylee Streifel. After a scoreless first period, Jakobsen looked strong on top early in the second period, accumulating 53 second of advantage time before needed injury time. Streifel chose neutral and with the score still 0-0 after two, rode out Jakobsen in the third to win 1-0.

Minnesota's second-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson beat sophomore Jordan Wood 9-4 in a battle of top six wrestlers at 285 to close out the dual.

With Lehigh in a 3-0 hole against sixth-ranked Missouri, Paetzell delivered his second top 10 win of the season, knocking off No. 9 John Erneste 5-2. Trailing 5-1 after two, Paetzell locked up a cradle for a takedown and two point near fall to take the lead.

"That's a good win for Brandon, who also did a decent job against Lizak," Santoro said. "That match turned on the first period takedown because the second and third periods were just about neutral. We have to be better in those positions and be ready when we step on the line. (As a team) we weren't really ready at times. We weren't physical when we made our initial contact. We hung on to our ties too long. We weren't touch-and-go. A lot of little things that we talk about every single day. We have to do those things in matches, that's what separates the good guys from the great guys."

The Tigers reeled off five straight wins to take control of the dual and take a 21-3 lead. Missouri's run was highlighted by a technical fall by No. 3 Jaydin Eierman over Karam and a 12-3 major by No. 13 Connor Flynn over Wolf. The featured bout of the dual matched Kutler and No. 4 Daniel Lewis at 174, but Lewis rode a strong first period to an 8-1 decision.

The Mountain Hawks did finish the dual strong with three consecutive wins to close things out, but it was not enough to deny Missouri a 28th straight dual win.

Preisch trailed Dylan Wisman 2-1 after two periods but picked things up in the third, scoring eight points to claim a 9-2 decision. An escape tied the bout at 2-2 before Preisch added a takedown, four point near fall and riding time to earn the victory.

Sophomore Kyle Gentile made his season dual debut at 197, stepping in for Jakobsen and rode a fast start to a 5-2 decision over Wyatt Koelling.

The final bout of the day for the Mountain Hawks saw Wood edge Zach Elam 2-0 thanks to a second period escape and third period ride out.

"We wrestled two really good things and we understand that," Santoro said. "We had some winnable matches – two or three in the first one and two in the last one – that we didn't get.

Lehigh (0-6) concludes action at the South Beach Duals on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks face No. 12 North Carolina at 11 a.m. and Virginia at 1 p.m.
