FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 21 Lehigh closed out action at the South Beach Duals against a pair of ACC opponents and the Mountain Hawks finally picked up their first win of the season, downing Virginia 28-12 Sunday in their second dual of the day. Earlier Sunday, Lehigh split five bouts with No. 12 North Carolina but a pair of injury default victories helped give the Tar Heels a 22-18 victory.
The Mountain Hawks return home from the South Beach Duals at 1-7 but showed improvement in every match, despite the ongoing rash of injuries.
"I'm happy for our fans," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said of the first dual win of the season. "It's been brutal. I've never had a start like this. It hasn't been lack of effort, just lack of manpower on the mat. It's good to have a win and be able to build some momentum off of it. More importantly, we wrestled better in each match. Even against Missouri yesterday, we wrestled better. Then a little better this morning against UNC and then here against Virginia."
Lehigh won the final five bouts in both duals. The Mountain Hawks closed the day by winning seven overall against Virginia, including four bonus wins among the final five weights.
Virginia claimed three of the first five bouts against Lehigh but freshman Luke Resnick held All-American Jack Mueller to a major decision. Sophomore Brandon Paetzell picked up Lehigh's first win of the day, scoring a takedown in sudden victory to knock off Louie Hayes 6-4 at 133. Senior Cortlandt Schuyler brought Lehigh back within 7-6 after beating Sam Martino 8-2 at 149.
A technical fall from Jake Keating over freshman Jimmy Hoffman put Virginia up 12-6 halfway, before Lehigh claimed the final five bouts.
Senior Gordon Wolf started the run, using his scrambling ability to pick up several takedown/near fall combinations from "danger" positions to post an 18-2 technical fall over 18th-ranked Cam Coy at 165. Junior Jordan Kutler gave Lehigh its first lead with a 10-2 major decision over Robby Patrick at 174 and senior Ryan Preisch followed with a 10-0 major over Chance McClure at 184.
Sophomore Kyle Gentile clinched Lehigh's first win of the season by knocking off seventh-ranked Jay Aiello 13-11 at 197. Gentile scored a takedown in the opening seconds and added a four point near fall. He also rode out the second period adding two more near fall points and held on late in the third.
"Gordon's win was big because Cam Coy is really good," Santoro said. "(197) was a huge win. That guy just took third in Vegas and is ranked top 10 in the country."
The final bout of the dual saw sophomore heavyweight Jordan Wood pin Robert Scherer in just 1:44.
Lehigh's first dual of the day saw the Mountain Hawks trail 22-0 halfway. Injuries hurt the Mountain Hawks again as two of Lehigh's losses against North Carolina came by injury default, with sophomore Luke Karam (141) and freshman Josh Humphreys (157) going down.
The Mountain Hawks battled back, winning all five bouts on the back half, highlighted by Kutler's first fall of the season, as he pinned Will MacDonald at the 4:20 mark.
Preisch won one of the featured bouts of the dual, using a first period takedown and strong ride to top Chip Ness 4-1 in a battle of top 15 wrestlers.
Gentile narrowly missed a major that would've kept Lehigh in the hunt into the final bout, but the Mountain Hawks' challenge for a late takedown was denied. Wood scored two first period takedowns to beat Cory Daniel in a battle of NCAA qualifiers at 285.
"I thought we out-wrestled both teams today, but I've never seen anything like what happened with two injury defaults in one match," Santoro said. "It's hard to recover from that. I thought our guys wrestled really well. We won five against North Carolina and felt good about winning the two we had to default in. When you put yourself in precarious positions, something bad is bound to happen. Scrambles are important in this sport but we need to hold better position too."
The Mountain Hawks will return to the mats with two home duals against EIWA rivals Jan. 11-12 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Lehigh will host Bucknell at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11 and then will welcome Cornell Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. in the annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Dual. Tickets for both duals can be purchased by visiting LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.
