McBride re-ups with Phillies on minor league deal for 2019 season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Former Lehigh baseball standout and Bethlehem native Matt McBride is staying close to home after re-signing with the Philadelphia Phillies on a minor league deal earlier this week.

McBride, 33, hit .242 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs in 60 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs in 2018. He returned home to the Lehigh Valley after a three-season stint with the Colorado Rockies (NL) and a season with the Oakland Athletics (AL) in 2016.

He was picked in the second round, 75th overall in the 2006 MLB First Year Player Draft by the Cleveland Indians after his stellar three-year career with the Mountain Hawks.

McBride hit .350 with 198 hits, 56 doubles, 17 home runs and 86 RBIs in 149 career games for Lehigh. He was named Patriot League Player of the Year in 2006 after hitting a Patriot League-high .417 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs to earn the Patriot League Triple Crown for the first time in program history. He was also named an ABCA All-American for his incredible junior season.

The 2019 season will be McBride's 14th overall during his professional baseball career.
