Princeton uses three tech falls to spoil No. 8 Lehigh's home opener, 21-19

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 8 Lehigh and Princeton split 10 bouts in the Mountain Hawks' home opener Friday night, but a 6-4 edge in bonus points helped the visiting Tigers earn a 21-19 win in front of a capacity crowd of 1,827 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

Princeton had three wins via technical fall, the third of which by Kevin Parker over junior Chase Gallik at 184 gave the Tigers an 18-13 lead with two bouts remaining. Patrick Brucki defeated sophomore Jake Jakobsen 7-4 at 197 to clinch Princeton's first win over the Mountain Hawks since 1968, snapping a 14-dual Lehigh winning streak in the series.

Sophomore Jordan Wood closed out the dual with a first period fall at 285, while sophomore Brandon Paetzell delivered a bonus point with a major decision at 133 to lead the Mountain Hawks, who fell to 0-2 in duals for the first time since 2011-12. Princeton is now 1-2.

"They out-fought us tonight, plain and simple," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "It was a match we could have won, but we didn't. We have to get better. We got beat in some close matches. We looked tired. We may have been too amped up going in. When things started to snowball we got tighter instead of being loose. In a seven minute match you have to be able to battle the whole time."

The dual began at 125 where Princeton freshman Pat Glory posted a 17-2 technical fall over freshman Luke Resnick to stake the Tigers an early 5-0 lead. Paetzell broke open a 7-6 match with a strong third period, finishing with a 16-8 major decision over Jonathan Gomez.

"(Paetzell) did a great job," Santoro said. "He kept scoring points. Gomez now has 'shucked' Darian, Scotty and now Brandon over the last two years, but he didn't get flustered. He kept wrestling.

Junior Ryan Pomrinca gave Lehigh its lone lead of the night, edging Marshall Keller 8-7 at 141. Pomrinca had two second period takedowns and added two escapes plus a third period reversal to claim the one point victory, which put Lehigh up 7-5.

Top-ranked Matt Kolodzik reclaimed the lead for the visitors with Princeton's second technical fall of the night, taking care of freshman Jimmy Hoffman 17-1.

True freshmen Josh Humphreys and Quincy Monday did battle in a key matchup at 157, with Humphreys making his official Lehigh debut. Humphreys scoring the initial takedown, only to get reversed in the final seconds of the first period. He rode Monday out in the second period and scored two escapes, while conceding a takedown and narrowly fighting off a takedown attempt in the final seconds to claim a 5-4 win by way of a sizeable riding time advantage. Humphreys' win tied the dual at 10-10 at intermission.

Princeton took the lead with an upset at 165 as Dale Tiongson knocked off 11th-ranked junior Cole Walter 5-3. Tiongson scored takedowns in the second and third periods to give the Tigers a 13-10 lead.

Junior Jordan Kutler pulled Lehigh even again at 174 with a 5-0 decision over Travis Stefanik, using a stalling point, escape, takedown and riding time to post the victory.

With senior Ryan Preisch unavailable at 184, Santoro sent out Gallik up a weight, hoping his unconventional style could cause problems for Parker. Unfortunately for Lehigh, Parker was able to get to Gallik's legs at will, and Gallik's style could not produce any theatrics as a 23-8 technical fall gave the Tigers the lead for good.

"Chase is so good at getting out of legs (on bottom)," Santoro said. "That was our main concern, but he went to his back too many times. It's not just about going for the pin, it's about keeping yourself in the match. He just needed to be in the match. Chase got out of legs early so Princeton stopped putting legs in, which was a good adjustment by them."

Needing to win out to salvage the dual, Jakobsen led Brucki early on the second 2-0 on a penalty point for unnecessary roughness and an escape, but Brucki answered with two second period takedowns and one in the third to win 7-4.

"Guys went out there and competed but when you have opportunities to win matches, you have to find ways to win the close ones," Santoro said.

Wood's pin of Obinna Ajah in 1:24 brought the final margin within two.

The Mountain Hawks will visit No. 1 Penn State Sunday in the 107th dual in the longtime series. The match is set for a 1:30 p.m. start from Rec Hall in University Park, Pa. Sunday's dual will be televised live on the Big Ten Network, while audio coverage will be available on WLVR-FM (91.3) beginning at 1:15 p.m.

"We have to wrestle more loosely," Santoro said. "We haven't really wrestled loose this year. For some of these guys it's their first time in the lineup. Maybe they're putting too much pressure on themselves. They just need to go out and wrestle."
