BETHLEHEM, Pa – For the first time since the 2015-16 season, Lehigh has started the year off 3-0 after defeating the Monmouth Hawks 63-48 at Stabler Arena on Education Day.
The Mountain Hawks have started 3-0 and defeated their opponents by 10 or more points just twice in program history, with it happening to begin the 1984-85 season and the 2014-15 season. Both seasons saw Lehigh start at least 6-0.
With the win Tuesday, the Mountain Hawks move to 2-0 on games that started before noon, as they dispatched the Central Connecticut Blue Devils in their previous game that started in the morning.
This also marked the third consecutive game Lehigh had three or more players record double figures in scoring, as junior Gena Grundhoffer (11), junior Camryn Buhr (14), and freshman Emma Grothaus (14) were the top three scorers for the Mountain Hawks. After receiving Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors Monday, Grothaus has been the co-leading scorer in two of the three games this year for Lehigh. Junior Hannah Hedstrom was all over the stat sheet for the Mountain Hawks, going 2-for-3 from the field, 2-for-2 from the foul line, for six points, while bringing in eight rebounds and dishing five assists.
"Hannah was unbelievable today, I told her it was probably one of her best games in her college career. She set the tone on the defensive end as well as the offensive zone. It was probably as complete of a game that I've seen her play. She's a tough kid, a competitive kid that leaves it all on the court," said head coach Sue Troyan after the game.
Both teams seemed out of sorts in the first quarter, even with Lehigh shooting 40 percent from the field, the Mountain Hawks only led by four points, 14-10.
Monmouth shot just 4-of-16 from the field, but the Hawks made them count and took advantage of a couple fouls.
The second quarter has been an explosive frame for the Mountain Hawks so far this season and this game was no exception. For the third time in as many games, the second frame of action saw the highest point total in a single quarter, with 18 points being dropped against Monmouth.
Lehigh began the second quarter on an 11-3 run, seeing Grothaus produce five of her nine points in the quarter in that stretch. The Mountain Hawks went to work in the paint, scoring eight of their 30 total points in the paint in the second quarter. The 30 total points scored in the paint set a season-high for Lehigh, which was only a game old after the 28 scored against Central Connecticut. Monmouth also saw a surge in scoring in the second quarter, shooting 60 percent from the field and dropped 17 points of its own.
It wasn't until the fourth quarter that Lehigh was able to finally gain firm separation over the Monmouth Hawks. That separation was due in part to stellar defense from Lehigh, shutting down Monmouth and holding them to a minuscule 13.3 shooting percentage (2-15). Lehigh on the other hand, put things into overdrive, shooting 54.5 percent from the field and over 60 percent from beyond the arc. With the clutch shooting, Lehigh was able to give themselves a 15-point cushion as the final buzzer rang.
"It was an awesome atmosphere here today," said Troyan. "If you ask our kids, they love playing in those gold uniforms and to play in front of four thousand kids that are just go,go,go with so much energy. We've played in different environments, we've played at UConn in front of 10,000 fans, and this is a much better environment to be in.
"I'd like give credit to our administration for the time and support they put into this event and supporting this event. It's financially supported by Lehigh. A lot of these schools wouldn't have the budget to support this so the fact Lehigh is able to step in speaks volumes about our commitment to our community."
Lehigh will be back home for its next game, as the Mountain Hawks host the Wildcats of Villanova this Friday, November 16 for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
