NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Lehigh women's basketball team picked up its first win on the road, as it defeated the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils 88-62 at Detrick Gymnasium on Saturday.
Much like their previous game against Kutztown, the Mountain Hawks saw points come from multiple avenues, with four players recording double figures in scoring. Junior Gena Grundhoffer led the way with 17 points against the Blue Devils while senior Hailey Pascoe dropped 14 points. Juniors Cameryn Benz and Camryn Buhr recorded 12 points each.
The Mountain Hawks also saw vast improvements to their free-throw percentage from their last outing. After shooting 47 percent from the charity stripe, Lehigh took full advantage of the free points from the Blue Devils, converting 81 percent of its free throws. One such Mountain Hawk to take full advantage was sophomore Mariah Sexe, who went 7-8 from the line.
Lehigh defense was in full effect as well, as the Blue Devils were held to a 32.3 shooting percentage for the game. The third and fourth quarters were especially bad for Central Connecticut, as it shot 23.1 percent in the third and 22.2 percent in the fourth quarter.
Lehigh and Central Connecticut were neck and neck in the first quarter, with neither team able to get clearance of the other. The largest lead for either team in the quarter was four points, and that came off a last second three-point shot from freshman Clair Steele to put Lehigh up 24-20 to end the quarter.
"I thought we came out here and made a statement early in the game. We were a little slow getting out of the gate the first three or four minutes, but after that, we tightened up on the defensive end," said head coach Sue Troyan after the game. "We did a great job of taking what the defense gave us, not taking bad shots. There was a lot of contributions from a lot of different kids."
With the exception of a quick two-point field goal to start the second quarter for the Blue Devils, Lehigh methodically pushed past Central Connecticut, leading by as much as 20 points. The second frame of action saw both Pascoe and Grundhoffer explode offensively, with the pair combining for 22 points. The second quarter brought a 68.4 percent shooting rate for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh shut down the Blue Devils for the remainder of the contest, holding the Blue Devils below 20 points per quarter for the remainder of the game. The Mountain Hawks would score another 33 points, with their largest lead coming in the third when they went up by 30 points. The fourth quarter was the only frame of action the Blue Devils outscored the Mountain Hawks, with Central Connecticut scoring 14 and the Mountain Hawks scoring 13.
The Hawks of Monmouth University come to town next, as the Mountain Hawks will host them for the annual Education Day on November 13. Opening tipoff is 11 a.m.
