BETHLEHEM, Pa. — On Wednesday night, the Mountain Hawks officially punched their ticket for the Patriot League Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Bucknell. On Saturday, Lehigh takes on Loyola in Baltimore for a chance to control its own destiny with the No. 1 seed in the league.
A win for Lehigh and a win over Holy Cross next Saturday at home would clinch the Mountain Hawks' first regular season championship since 2006.
The Mountain Hawks did their duty to knock off the Bison on Wednesday night, while the Greyhounds did theirs by taking down American 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Loyola enters Saturday's matchup on a five-game winning streak.
Loyola leads the league with 16 points, Lehigh is second with 15, while Colgate is currently third with 14.
After going 387 straight minutes without a goal, freshman Josh Luchini notched the game-winner in the 57th minute to lift the Mountain Hawks over the Bison. The goal was unassisted and Luchini's sixth goal of the year to take over the team-lead. Luchini had three Lehigh's five shots on goal while senior Mark Forrest had one shot on goal.
The Mountain Hawk defense was excellent once again, able to keep yet another opponent out of the net. The defense has been steadily anchored by junior Zarin Tuten, senior captain Matt Morana, junior Nolan Coulter and freshman Dawson Berger.
Junior goalkeeper Will Smith made two saves to earn his Patriot League-leading ninth shutout of the season. Smith is also ranked second in goals against average (0.72) and first in save percentage (0.829).
The Greyhounds (10-3-1, 5-1-1 PL) have had a fantastic 2018 season and haven't lost a game since Oct. 3 vs. Bucknell. In its last five games, Loyola has scored 16 times.
Brian Saramago leads Loyola with eight goals and a Patriot League-leading seven assists for 23 points. Josh Fawole has added five goals and two assists for 12 points, while Barry Sharifi and Nico Brown have both tallied four goals on the season. Greyhounds goalkeeper Chase Vosvick has been fantastic this season, registering five shutouts with a 0.81 GAA and a save percentage of 0.756.
The Greyhounds are averaging 2.14 goals per game this season, a shot percentage of 0.144 and a shots on goal percentage of 0.481.
Like the Mountain Hawks, Loyola also has wins over Boston U. (3-1), Army (2-0), Navy (4-1) and St. John's (1-0) this year.
Lehigh leads the all-time series with Loyola 3-2, with the home team winning all five of the matchups. The Mountain Hawks came out victorious with a 4-2 win over the Greyhounds on Oct. 28, 2017 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Saturday's game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
