Mountain Hawks set to wrap up fall season Saturday with fourth annual Class Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team is set to host its fourth annual Class Day on Saturday, featuring an intrasquad competition between the classes. Saturday's racing begins at 9 a.m. on the Lehigh River in Allentown, Pa.

"Class Day is becoming a nice tradition to separate the fall from winter training," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I'm hoping it grows to include alumni in the future and really become something that brings the present and past teams together before the upcoming spring."

The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed a productive fall. Lehigh began by hosting the Lehigh Invitational on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, while also competing at Navy Day in Philadelphia and Head of the Charles in Boston. Last weekend wrapped up with the Mountain Hawks finishing 10th out of 40 crews in the Men's Collegiate Fours to guarantee an entry into next year's Head of the Charles.

"This fall, the team has definitely shown we are continuing to make progress," said Conley. "It also showed we are still off the mark from the top teams we compete against. If we want to achieve the goals we have in the spring the winter, has to be aggressively attacked with intent each day and over break."

Before the winter season arrives, Lehigh has one more regatta to attack, Class Day, which sees boat captains selected based on best erg score for each class year.

"The boat captains then selected their own boats from within their class years to fill boats, with a few exceptions," said Conley. "The boat captains have been in charge of making the lineups (including explaining why they made such lineups), practice schedule and training, and organizing everything for their particular boat all week. It really allows them to take ownership and learn a small part of what goes into a daily practice."

The event only enhances something Conley is looking for within the team anyway… healthy competition. If the athletes are pushing each other to be their best, it will help the collective group be at its best.

"The ultimate goal of Class Day for the team is to win the trophy, but it also allows for bragging rights in the boathouse for the year," said Conley. "It allows the team to also compete differently amongst themselves and learn about rowing from a different perspective by taking control of daily practice organization."

Following Saturday's regatta, the Mountain Hawks will begin shifting focus towards the spring season.

"After Class Day, the team has a week where the captains hold practices as the athletes take their second round of exams," said Conley. "Then it is on to winter training, which involves a lot of physical conditioning on the ergs (rowing machines), lifting and running. We will do that until we can get back on the water in February if the team achieves their winter goals."
