BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's golf team will close out its fall schedule when the Mountain Hawks host the two-day, 36-hole Lehigh Invitational, beginning Sunday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks are the two-time defending champions at their own tournament, after Lehigh edged Fairleigh Dickinson by one stroke in 2017.
Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 6,012 yards from the ladies tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.
This will be the fourth and final fall event for the Mountain Hawks, who finished third out of nine teams at the Towson Invitational, second out of six teams at Bucknell's Invitational and tied for fifth out of 12 teams earlier this week at the Brown Bear Invitational. Senior Reagan Jahn tied for sixth at Brown, her third top-six individual finish this fall. Jahn led Lehigh in its two most recent tournaments, while junior Minuette Laessig was the top performer at Towson.
Lehigh topped a seven-team field last year, besting FDU by one stroke. Jahn tied for second last season, while Laessig and Aileen Jeong also placed in the top 10 individually.
The Mountain Hawks' lineup for the Lehigh Invitational will feature Jahn, Jeong, Laessig, freshman Alexis Carras and sophomore Angela Ding. Junior Rebecca Markunas and sophomore Alexis Browne will compete as individuals.
This year's tournament will feature 10 teams, with Lehigh joined by Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Holy Cross, La Salle, LIU-Brooklyn, Monmouth, Navy, Saint Francis and St. John's. Monmouth's Haley Goodling returns as the defending individual medalist.
Lehigh will play with Navy and St. John's with players going off the 10th tee beginning Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Monday's final round will also begin at 9:30 a.m. with players going off holes one and 10 based on the team standings.
