Mountain Hawks battle, but fall short vs. Rider 4-2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team took a 1-0 lead into the second half and after three straight Rider goals, pulled back within 3-2, but the Broncs were victorious in the end as they beat the Mountain Hawks 4-2 on Senior Day Sunday afternoon. First-year Leah Mullery scored both Lehigh goals off penalty corners, marking the second multi-goal game of her young career. Junior goalkeeper Paige Innarella made double-figure saves for the fifth time this season, finishing Sunday with 12.
"In the first half, we played very confidently and poised," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "In the second half, we needed to play with more urgency in order to keep up with the adjustments that they made. As soon as we got down by a few goals, it was a little bit too late for us to get our momentum back. We had some great attacking momentum in the first half, and I think we needed to score some goals we missed opportunities on in order to give us the edge going into the second half."
Rider tallied the game's first two shots, but Innarella made the first two of her eight first-half stops. On the other end, Lehigh responded, converting its first penalty corner (and shot) into the game's first goal. Off the corner, sophomore Lenke Havas made a feed towards goal where Mullery made the redirection past Broncs' goalkeeper Lena Vandam at the 5:11 mark.
"Unfortunately, in the last couple games, we haven't been as strong with our corner execution and today, we were again," said Dallmeyer. "I thought that was a really nice rebound for us from previous games."
After the goal, Innarella stood tall, making six more saves before the first half expired. The Mountain Hawks also had their fair share of opportunities, recording six shots in the span of 2:29 between the 32nd and 34th minutes.
Rider's offense came alive early in the second half, scoring goals at 37:34 and 39:16 to take a 2-1 lead. The Broncs eventually extended their lead to 3-1 at the 53:29 mark, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go down quietly. Less than two minutes after going down two, Lehigh creeped right back into the game. For a second time, Havas fed Mullery for the tip, this time to pull Lehigh within 3-2 at 55:18.
"Leah is awesome. She's a rock start," said Dallmeyer. "She is wearing a facemask, but you wouldn't know it by the way she's playing. She is so solid and strong-minded, and that has really helped us. She hasn't been shaken by her injury; she's been performing just as strongly as she has been all season. She's someone who can really execute under pressure and might not even feel the pressure. She just does her job really well and we appreciate that."
The Mountain Hawks were able to generate three corners the rest of the way, but couldn't add another, while Rider also scored an insurance goal in the 62nd minute to account for the 4-2 final.
Final shots were 24-13 in favor of Rider while the Broncs held a 9-8 edge in penalty corners. Innarella made 12 saves across Vandam, who tallied nine. Sophomore Anna Mostoller made a defensive save for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh will wrap up the season with three straight on the road, beginning next weekend when it travels to Boston University on Saturday (Oct. 20) and Yale on Sunday (Oct. 21).
