Mountain Hawks drop hard-fought 5-1 final at Boston University

10/20/2018 4:20:00 PM | Field Hockey

BOSTON – The Lehigh field hockey team wrapped up its Patriot League schedule on Saturday with a hard-fought effort at No. 24 Boston University. The Mountain Hawks held the Terriers to two goals in the game's first 50 minutes, but it wasn't enough in a 5-1 loss on Saturday. In the game's 70th minute, Lehigh scored the program's first-ever goal at Boston University as junior Amanda Boyer converted her first goal of the season.

"It took us a while to begin matching the speed of a fast and strong BU team," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We had several moments when we had to change our press and midfield defense to keep up with their evolving game plan. We struggled to stop the ball in our attacking half, which resulted in a lot of pressure on our defense. Sam Nason continues to develop into an aggressive and relentless defender, Leah Mullery brings the poise and talent to outlet up the left and Lenke Havas is perhaps one of the most talented players this program has had."

The Terriers opened the scoring at the 3:07 mark as a redirect found the back of the cage. The middle stages of the half was scoreless, as junior goalkeeper Paige Innarella made four of her five first-half stops over the middle 32 minutes to keep Lehigh's deficit at just one. Boston University went on to double its lead in the 33rd minute to take a 2-0 halftime advantage.

In the second, Boston University had a flurry of goals, scoring three times between 50:39 and 59:30. Lehigh wouldn't quit, creating a penalty corner in the final minute which Boyer converted at the 69:31 mark. Havas added an assist on the play to increase her Patriot League leading total to eight on the season.

"Amanda Boyer is one of the most focused, disciplined and hardest-working athletes I have coached," said Dallmeyer. "She is always present mentally, whether that be at practice, in the classroom or in a social setting. Today, she was present in three different positions as we tried to combat BU's adjustments and I believe she is playing the best hockey we have seen from her this year, which allows us to move her into key positions in critical moments and know she will find a way to get the job done. I am thrilled that she scored her first goal of the season in a game where she was asked to step up. She answered."

Final shots were 25-4 in favor of the Terriers while Boston University held a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners. Innarella finished with 11 save while Kathleen Keegan made one for Boston University.

"Generating attack against BU is a great task when they have the returning defender of the year in their backfield," said Dallmeyer. "We had some great break opportunities that we just couldn't get to the circle, and three corners earned with a goal coming off one of them."

Lehigh will return to action on Sunday when it travels to Yale to face the Bulldogs. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
