Three-goal surge helps Yale past Mountain Hawks, 5-2

Â
"It was very competitive and we were happy for that," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "How we played Yale in the past, it was not a very competitive game, so we worked on making adjustments and making sure we were smart and poised throughout game play. Our styles matched up really nicely. We struggled a little bit with their big-hit style out of the backfield. They bypassed the midfield and that's not something we were hoping for, so we need to insert ourselves a little bit more into play to be able to possess, receive and then carry back into our attacking line."
Â
The first half saw Yale tally 10 of the 15 shots, while holding a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Lehigh's first shot on target came off the stick of Alvarez in the ninth minute, but Bulldogs' goalkeeper Sydney Terroso made the stop. Innarella had two saves herself in the early going, but couldn't stop Yale's opportunity at the 20:09 mark as Bridget Condie fed Anissa Abboud, who gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Â
Yale went on its three-goal run early in the second, with goals at 40:13, 44:15 and 46:04, but like the Mountain Hawks have been doing all year, they wouldn't quit. First, Lehigh converted off a penalty corner for the second straight day. This time, freshman Olivia Perrone passed to Havas, whose shot got past new goalkeeper Chaney Kalinich at the 61:04 mark.
Â
"We haven't been a team that could score in every game on corners, but it's been great for us this year," said Dallmeyer. "It's been a strength and shows our progress. We've worked on it a lot. We have a lot of people in some good positions who are coming up for us in big moments. Being able to score goals in these tough games is something we weren't able to do last year. Putting up some goals against BU and Yale for the first time on their fields is something that shows progress for the program and we're proud of that."
Â
Lehigh wasn't done. Less than a minute later, junior Amanda Boyer toed the end line and centered to Alvarez, who put home her third goal of the season at 61:48.
Â
However, the Mountain Hawks couldn't pull any closer and Yale added an insurance tally in the 68th minute for the 5-2 final.
Â
Final shots were 18-13 in favor of Yale while the Bulldogs held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
Â
"We had a lot of positional changes today trying to make things work," said Dallmeyer. "Our team has been great all season in taking those with stride and making the best out of being at new positions and trying to be a spark for our team and getting some things going on different lines. I was happy to see Olivia on the forward line and Lenke in the midfield doing a rally nice job."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Sunday at Towson in their season finale. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
