Mountain Hawks pick up 3-2 win at Towson in season finale

TOWSON, Md. – In the final game of her rookie season, Olivia Perrone had a hand in all three Mountain Hawk goals while sophomore Lenke Havas recorded a goal and assist to break the school record for assists in a season, and classmate Maddie Leavitt scored her first-career goal as the Lehigh field hockey team topped Towson in its season finale, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. The win marked the second time in head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer's three seasons that Lehigh won its season finale, after the program did so just once in the previous 18 years.
Â
"We are really pleased to end the season with a win," said Dallmeyer. "We made some great changes to our lineup and took a risk putting Olivia on the forward line. She made a lot happen for us, including creating a lot of corner opportunities. Our defensive line really limited their attack, allowing our least amount of shots all season, with Leah Mullery in the center back role and the new addition of Anna Mostoller to really give Lenke the opportunity to run the midfield confidently. We continued to execute corners efficiently and run a fantastic stall in pressure moments. Amanda Boyer and Olivia took charge in the last few minutes to secure the win."
Â
A defensive game saw just 13 combined shots between the teams, eight by Lehigh and five by Towson. It was the Mountain Hawks who fired the game's first five shots, scoring two goals before the Tigers had attempted a shot. The first came at the 13:30 mark as Havas scored her sixth goal of the season off a penalty corner, assisted by Perrone.
Â
Lehigh doubled its lead in the 27th minute as this time, Havas found Perrone off another corner. The assist was Havas' ninth of the season to became Lehigh's all-time leader for assists in a season.
"When we offer the opportunity for student athletes to come to Lehigh, they know that there's a great opportunity to create change and do things that have never been done before within our program," said Dallmeyer. "I am so proud of Lenke and her dedication to this team; she is an ideal player to coach and I am happy that she made her stamp on LUFH with a program record."
Â
Two minutes later, Towson took its first shot, which was blocked, but Beira Ho put home the rebound to pull the Tigers within 2-1 at 28:55.
Â
Just over 13 minutes into the second half, Lehigh added insurance as its ninth penalty corner of the game led to its third goal. This time, Leavitt scored her first-career goal, assisted by first-years Perrone and Mauri Ware. That goal proved important as Towson scored in the 66th minute, but the Mountain Hawks held on for the 3-2 victory.
Â
Final shots were 8-5 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Paige Innarella made two saves, across Towson's Ashleigh Bathras, who also had two.
Â
Sunday's game marked Lehigh's season finale, capping off a season of continued progress. Along with Sunday's victory, the Mountain Hawks beat Ball State for the first time since 1984, topped Patriot League foe Colgate and took archrival Lafayette to overtime for a second straight year. Lehigh also scored nine more goals than all of last season, netting 24 in 2018.
