STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Junior Stacie Nadel finished runner-up in the 3,000 meter run and freshman Brittany Curtin took second in the weight throw and added a top-five shot put placement to lead the Lehigh women's track and field team at the Wagner Invitational on Friday. The duo was part of a group of mostly throwers and jumpers who are coming back from the holiday break, as well as some cross country runners who were running in their first track races of the season.
Curtin shined in the throws for Lehigh, highlighted by a runner-up performance in the weight throw, taking second place out of 43 finishers with her ECAC qualifying toss of 16.73 meters. She also collected a fifth place shot put of 12.77m. Senior Amanda Youngblood finished two places behind Curtin in seventh place in the shot put (12.48m) and also finished ninth in the weight throw. Senior Paige Grossman took 13th place in the weight throw (14.51m) and freshman Maggie Tarmey tied for 14th (14.13m).
"She's very strong, technically sound and she's just going to get better," head coach Matt Utesch said. "We're excited to watch her the rest of the season."
In the vault, freshman Madisyn Hawkins and junior Kaitlyn Toman tied for first at 3.45 meters, but lost the first place tiebreaker on number of misses.
"The vault is another event where you need to have some rhythm," Utesch said. "They came back and jumped pretty well so I was pleased with that. Other girls jumped well too and they're going to improve. Iron sharpens iron and they'll push each other and be really good."
A crew of four jumpers all tied for eighth in the high jump at 1.55 meters, including Jordan Otto, Alexis Wintle, Olivia Reinold and Tyler Bannister.
On the track, Nadel had an impressive showing in the 3,000m run, placing second overall in 10:17.31 in an event with 45 placers. She was joined in the top 10 by sophomore Diana Hammerstone (PR-10:27.01) in 10th and junior Stephanie Hayes (10:28.16) who placed 14th overall.
"Stacie had a nice opener," Utesch said. "All of them did well and it was good to see them come out strong."
In the 60m hurdles, junior Noreen Byrne qualified for the finals with a prelim time of 9.47, before going onto the finals where she finished eighth.
Freshman Morgan McConnell led the way for Lehigh in 13th place of the 200m dash. In the 800m, sophomore Mary Casey took sixth place overall out of 51 finishers in 2:21.21. In the mile, freshman Amanda Royds placed 18th of 67 finishers to lead the team in 5:19.58.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will host the Angry Birds Invitational next Saturday, Jan. 13 at Rauch Fieldhouse.
