Mountain Hawks Earn Two Wins to Wrap Up Weekend at Covert Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore Mary Casey and the 4x400 relay team of Amanda Fisher, Brooke Schaeffer, Kristen Lavallee and Alexis Smith took home individual wins on Saturday at the 26th annual Covert Classic at Rauch Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawks also took home four runner-up performances, including two from senior thrower Amanda Youngblood, one from Lavallee in the 1,000m, and the 'B' 4x400 relay team. LU also added five third place performances in a solid day to conclude the two-meet weekend.
On the track, Lehigh landed three runners in the top 10 of the 60m hurdles of an event with 37 placers. Noreen Byrne took sixth (9.36), Mariah Kozub placed seventh (9.39) and Brett DeWeese finished 10th (PR-9.53). In the 60m dash, senior Liyala Dickens led Lehigh in eighth place (8.15), followed by freshman Claudia Piron in 14th place (8.29).
Out of over 70 runners in the 200m dash, Lehigh had a group of four finish in the top 10, led by Dickens (6th/26.70), Morgan McConnell (7th/26.86), Smith (T-8th/26.94) and Piron (T-8th/26.94). Schaeffer was not far behind in 13th (27.07).
Erin Racano (1:19.11) finished third in the 500m, one spot ahead of teammate Sophie Antonioli (1:20.40) who won her heat and placed fourth overall.
Lehigh also had a strong showing in the 800m, placing four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 11 overall. Diana Hammerstone notched a third place finish in 2:20.43, followed by Hanna Brosky in fourth (2:21.37) and Jenn Mickens in fifth (2:22.50). Freshman Miranda Royds followed in eighth place and Kara Bonner took 11th.
LU followed that up by dominating the field of the 1,000m, where all four Mountain Hawks runners swept the top four places out of 17 racers. Casey led the way and broke the tape in 3:04.60 and Lavallee took runner-up in 3:05.32. One day after taking second in the 3,000m at the Dr. Sander Invitational, Ashleigh Crawford finished third in Saturday's 1000, and Tyler Scanlin took fourth (3:09.29).
Bonner ran a season-best time in the mile of 5:25.11 to finish eighth overall.
In the distance events, Hannah Knudsen nailed down a new personal record of 11:07.12 to lead the Lehigh pack in fifth place in the 3,000m run. Sydney Brannon (11:15.64) also cracked the top 10 in seventh place finish out of 29 runners. Over in the 5,000m, Jennifer Burke led the way in fifth place of the 5,000m in 19:39.12.
In the 4x4 relay, LU swept the top two spots of the event, with the quartet of Fischer, Schaeffer, Lavallee and Smith finishing first in 4:00.00. Lehigh's 'B' team of McConnell, Brosky, Byrne and Racano finished runner-up out of 18 teams in 4:05.28.
Over in the field events, Caity Reverand finished fourth overall in the pole vault and tied her personal record of 3.35m. Lehigh also had Grace Gardella tie her PR of 3.05m in sixth place.
In the high jump, Oliva Reinold and Jordan Otto finished in a four-way tie for third overall after clearing 1.55m. Both cleared 1.55m on their first try, before missing three times at 1.60m.
DeWeese took fourth place of the long jump, finishing just two centimeters off her PR (5.38m), and in the triple jump, Armani Comick led the way in 12th place at 10.43m.
In the weight throw, Youngblood took runner-up and was the top placing collegiate athlete, throwing just shy of a new PR at 16.60m. She was one of four Lehigh throwers to finish in the top 10 of the 51-person event as Brittany Curtin took fifth (13.65m), Paige Grossman finished sixth (15.49m) and Maggie Tarmey placed ninth (13.91m).
Youngblood grabbed another runner-up performance, this time in the shot put where she finished with a throw of 13.51m. Curtin joined her near the top by rounding out the top five with a throw at 12.64m.
Up next, Lehigh will head back to the Ocean Breeze Track in Staten Island, N.Y. next Saturday for the Villanova Invitational.
