BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team will hit the road once again this Wednesday night to take on Colgate. The Mountain Hawks are in third place in the Patriot League standings after a 4-2 start to league play, with both of their losses coming on the road. Lehigh is looking to rebound after an 82-64 defeat at first place American on Sunday.
Colgate is looking for its first win in league play following a 0-6 start. Lehigh is 8-1 at home this season, but has struggled to find consistency on the road where they have lost four straight. Wednesday will take them back to upstate New York where they picked up their last road win at Cornell on Nov. 20.
Colgate hung tough with Bucknell in their last game before falling 84-64 after this Bison closed the game on a 31-11 run. Lehigh surrendered over 70 points for just the third time all season in their loss at American. Lehigh shot 35 percent in the game and over 38 percent from beyond the arc, but American shot 50 percent from the floor and a season-high 63.2 percent from downtown with three players scoring at least 20 points to improve to 6-0 in the league. LU Sophomore Camryn Buhr picked up her fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Lehigh will return home this Saturday to host Alumnae Day at Stabler Arena at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, Lehigh will hold a pregame ceremony to welcome back members of its first Patriot League championship team from 1997.
ALL-TIME VS. COLGATE
Wednesday's matchup will be the 65th all-time between Lehigh and Colgate. Over the last 10 matchups dating back to the start of the 2012-13 season, the Mountain Hawks hold a 7-4 record, including a 2-3 record on the road and 5-1 mark at Stabler Arena. Lehigh leads the all-time series 38-26. Colgate has won three of the last five meetings overall and three of the last four in Hamilton.
The two teams have split the regular season series each of the last four years, and Colgate has not won the season series (including PLT matchups) since taking two of three in the 2004-05 season. The home team has won each game over the last two seasons. Last year in Hamilton, Lehigh rallied from down 20 to take a three-point lead late in the third quarter before Colgate outscored Lehigh 18-15 in the fourth. Quinci Mann led Lehigh with 23 points with five three-pointers and Mae Williams scored a then career-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Colgate's Kateri Stone netted 29 points on 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 from beyond the arc.
On Mar. 1 at Stabler Arena, Lehigh shot a season-high 53.6 percent and used 19 points from Mann and 17 from Gena Grundhoffer to pull away in the second half for an 83-74 win in the regular season finale.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate enters Wednesday as the only remaining team without a win in Patriot League play (4-13, 0-6 PL). The Raiders have dropped nine straight dating back to an 84-64 home win against UMass Lowell on Dec. 2.
Thus far in league play, Colgate has allowed an average of 70 points per game and a -15.5 scoring margin, along with nine assists and 3.8 steals per game, all last in the league. However, they do rank third in league play by holding opponents to just 28.8 percent shooting from three-point range. Colgate (-2.0) ranks one spot higher than Lehigh (-3.5) in PL rebounding margin, with the teams ranking seventh and eighth, respectively. The Raiders also rank third in the league in blocked shots, with 3.5 per game, compared to the Mountain Hawks who come in last at 2.3.
Overall this season, junior Summer King ranks fourth in the PL with a .481 field goal percentage. She is also fifth overall with 1.1 blocks per game. King leads the Raiders with 9.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Kateri Stone is next among active players with 6.8 ppg and Nia Ahart averages six points per contest and is shooting 40 percent from the field, including a team-best 38.7 percent from three-point land. Abby Schubiger (4.3 ppg) is coming off a career-best 14 points against Bucknell.
In their last game, the Raiders were tied at 46 with Bucknell late in the third quarter before the Bison ran off a 31-11 run to close the game and win 77-57. Colgate, who owns a league-low -9.0 turnover margin and averages over 20 turnovers per league game, only turned the ball over six times in the game, including just once in the first half.
Colgate will be without the services of sophomore Rachel Thomspon, who went down with a season ending injury against Holy Cross on Dec. 29. Last year as a freshman, she ranked third on the team with 10.2 points. She was the team's second leading scorer (8.9 ppg) and rebounder (5.3 rpg) this season.
