Lehigh battles in 4-0 loss to No. 22 American

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - No. 22 American scored two goals in the first 10:21, but the Lehigh field hockey team settled in, allowing just one goal over the next 59:37 in a 4-0 loss to the Eagles on Friday. Lehigh increased the pressure late in the first half and into the second, but was only able to muster three shots for the game.
Â
"Once we were able to get some momentum, we were able to prove to ourselves we can keep up with the pace that American was setting," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We were able to build some momentum and keep the game exciting."
Â
The Eagles came out with two goals off penalty corners at the 4:13 and 10:21 marks. From there, Lehigh's defense allowed just three shots the remainder of the half. Only one was on goal, but freshman Lenke Havas made the defensive save to keep the Mountain Hawks' deficit at 2-0 following 45 minutes of play. Lehigh's best chance offensively came with just seconds left in the first as sophomore Amanda Boyer had a dangerous opportunity near the end line, but American goalkeeper Maura Jacobs made the stop.
Â
American scored early in the second half, but the Mountain Hawks once again settled down nicely. Lehigh pressured, but couldn't find the back of the cage and American added a final tally with just two seconds remaining to account for the 4-0 final.
Â
"There are some mental mistakes being made, but overall, we're starting to put together a stronger 70 minutes and we're starting to prove to ourselves that we're capable," said Dallmeyer. "We certainly have some things we need to work out on an individual basis, but our work rate was really high today. Effort is something that can keep us in games against tougher opponents, because we can control that. Today, I thought everyone on the field gave us everything they have."
Â
Final shots were 15-3 in favor of American while the Eagles held a 15-3 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Paige Innarella made six saves for the Mountain Hawks.
Â
Lehigh returns to action next Friday, Sept. 29 at Bucknell. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
