LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior Lucas Warning wrapped up competition for Lehigh on Saturday's at the NCAA First Round Prelims at the University of Kentucky. After qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the shot put on Friday, Warning returned on Saturday in an attempt to qualify for the discus, where he finished 38th overall with a top throw of 51.89 meters after waiting out an over three-hour rain/lightning delay.
"I'm really proud of him and he represented the program pretty well," head coach Matt Utesch said. "The discus isn't his favorite event, but he threw pretty well against a very talented field."
Despite falling short of qualifying in the discus, Warning will still be making his first trip to the finals in Eugene, Oregon after placing ninth in Friday's shot put prelims, posting the second furthest shot put in school history (18.82m). The mark is bested only by his Patriot League Championship winning throw of 18.98m on May 6. He will be the only shot putter in Eugene not from a Power Five conference school.
He will be joined by fellow senior Courtney Avery, who is headed back to the NCAA Finals for the second straight year after she placed fifth on Friday in the high jump, tying her own school record at 1.82 meters. She was one of six athletes to clear the 1.82m mark. The mark sits two centimeters higher than her mark from last year's First Round and four centimeters higher than her 11th place height from last year's finals. This is the first time under the current qualifying criteria that Lehigh has had two different athletes qualify for the finals at the NCAA Championships.
"The next step is to go to Eugene and repeat what we did here," Utesch said. "If we have the same kind of performances, we'll be in good shape."
The finals of the NCAA Championships will take place June 7-10 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
