EUGENE, Ore. – A pair of Lehigh seniors will be among the athletes competing this week at the NCAA National Championships. Lucas Warning will be making his first trip to historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus to compete in the shot put and Courtney Avery will be making her second straight appearance in the finals in the high jump.
Â
Warning will compete on the first day of competition on Wednesday at 9:40 p.m. ET and Avery will compete on Saturday's final day of competition at 6 p.m. ET. All of this week's championship action will be broadcast live on the ESPN family of networks, with both Avery's and Warning's events available live on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.com.
Â
The duo is among five athletes from the Patriot League to qualify for the finals. Avery holds the highest ranking of any Patriot League athlete at No. 6 in the women's high jump, while Warning enters as the 15th seed in the men's shot put. Joining them in representing the Patriot League will be Boston University's Toria Levy (women's 400m) and Ethan Homan (men's 800m), plus Navy's Lucas Stalnaker (men's 10,000m).
Â
Avery became Lehigh's first female track and field All-American in program history last year after she tied for 11th overall by clearing 1.78 meters, earning Second Team All-American honors. She punched her return ticket to the finals this year after placing fifth in the first round prelims on May 26 in Lexington, Ky. She cleared 1.82 meters for the second time this year, tying her own school record.
Â
The meet will cap what has been an outstanding season and Lehigh career for Avery, who won her third straight outdoor league championship in the high jump on May 6. She also broke her own school record (1.82m) to win this year's Penn Relays High Jump Championship of America, becoming just the eighth female in Penn Relays history to win multiple championships in the event. In her performance at the ECAC Championships, Avery won the high jump by clearing at 1.77 meters, marking the second win of her career at the ECAC outdoor meet, and her sixth All-East honor overall (fourth outdoor). Last year in the First Round, she leapt a then-school record 1.80 meters to put herself in a first place tie, qualifying her for the finals.
Â
Warning will be making his first trip to Eugene after placing ninth overall in the NCAA First Round prelims by posting the second furthest shot put in school history (18.82m). Of the 24 shot put finals qualifiers, Warning is one of only four, and the only one from the East Region, to come from a non-Power Five conference school. He captured his first career IC4A title two weeks ago (18.11m) and won his second straight outdoor shot put title (third overall) by breaking his own school record at 18.98 meters. In addition to being the school's indoor record holder, Warning holds the three furthest outdoor shot puts in school history after breaking the school benchmark earlier this season, a record that previously stood for 45 years.
Â
There are 24 qualifiers in each event at the NCAA Championships; the top 12 from both the East and West Regions. Those who place in the top eight will be recognized as First Team All-Americans, with placers 9-16 earning Second Team All-America status, while the remaining eight will earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades.
