EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Lucas Warning took home Second Team All-America accolades on Wednesday night with a 10th place finish at the NCAA Track and Field National Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon. Warning's best throw flew 18.94 meters, which fell three centimeters shy of ninth place, which would have qualified him for the finals. He becomes Lehigh's second male track and field All-American in the Patriot League era, and the first since Ryan Mahalsky in 2015. He is also the first shot putter in league history to earn All-America honors.
Qualifying as one of the top 24 shot putters in the country, Warning entered the championships as the 15th overall seed after finishing ninth in the East Region prelims. He was the only representative from the East Region from a non-Power Five conference institution and one of just five overall. He finished second out of the 12 competitors in Flight One.
The All-American performance caps what has been a tremendous and accolade-filled Lehigh career for the Metztown, Pa. native. A three-time Patriot League champion, Warning graduates as the school's indoor (18.25m) and outdoor (18.98m) shot put record holder, breaking both records that had stood since 1972. He also broke the school's discus record (54.74m) with his third place finish at last month's Patriot League Championships. He also won the first IC4A title of his career this season (18.11m). He competed at the Penn Relays three times, finishing as high as eighth in the 2017 Shot Put Championship of America.
"I think that the whole thing has large overtones of mixed emotions," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Knowing this was the culmination of his career, and getting that close to getting three more throws and extending your season at the highest possible as a collegian. It is crazy to have those kinds of emotions and still be able to perform as well as you can."
Overall, Warning finishes his Lehigh career holding the top 12 indoor and top four outdoor shot puts in school history.
"He's done everything you can ask of any athlete," Utesch said. "We've asked him to compete at a dual meet level, the Patriot League level and the regional level, and he's won in each of those. Then he competes at the national level, and becomes an All-American. I think any program in the country would be excited to have him as part of their program, and we've been lucky to have him be a part of ours.
"He's been a great leader for us and I hope the rest of the athletes on our team, and from other sports around the school realize that you can come to Lehigh, compete at the highest level and have success here," Utesch said.
Elsewhere in Wednesday's championship, Virginia's Filip Mihaljevic (21.30m) successfully defended his national title, while Colorado State's Mostafa Hassan (20.38m) took second and Nicholas Demaline (20.08m) of Ohio State finished third.
Lehigh will have one more athlete compete for a national championship in high jumper Courtney Avery. She enters as the sixth seed overall and will compete at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday.
