LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman Hannah Patrick opened up Lehigh's competition at the First Round of the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Thursday evening with a 32nd place finish in the javelin. After entering the competition 46th in the descending order list and waiting out a two-hour rain delay, Patrick used a throw of 42.92 meters on her second throw, placing her 14 spots ahead of her seed mark.

"I'm really happy," said head coach Matt Utesch. "As a freshman, she comes into this meet which is unlike any place she's ever been; it's a first class facility and very different with how they treat the athletes. Despite the weather situation, she kept her head, came out and threw great. It wasn't her best throw, but it was consistent with what she's been doing this season, and for a freshman to come into this situation, I couldn't be happier."

Patrick caps a solid freshman campaign that saw her win bronze at the Patriot League Championships after throwing 44.20m. She followed that up with a personal record of 44.89m to win the ECAC Championships, which was her first collegiate win and qualified her for the NCAA First Round.

"As soon as she finished her three throws, she started talking about ways she's going to work next year and how to prepare for this meet and meets beyond this," Utesch said. "So she's looking at it exactly the right way."

Lehigh will have three athletes competing on Friday with Courtney Avery (high jump) and Lucas Warning (shot put) both competing at 4:30 p.m., and sophomore Maura Henderson running in the 3,000m steeplechase at 8:30 p.m. Warning will also compete in the discus at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
