PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh men's rowing team enjoyed success on day one of the Dad Vail Regatta, Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Lehigh's Varsity Eight and Freshmen Eight both advanced to the semifinals Friday afternoon, with the Varsity Eight qualifying for Saturday's petite final.

In addition, the Mountain Hawks' Junior Varsity Eight and Four rowed on Friday as all four crews will also race on Saturday.

"Overall, the team has stepped up and shown that despite being a younger team, we're finding speed across the board," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It's exciting we have such a young team. The future is looking promising."

The Varsity Eight led the way Friday, finishing in 10th place out of 24 crews in its morning heat, with a time of 5:39.990. The crew then came in fourth place in its semifinal heat (time of 6:07.479) to advance to Saturday's petite final.

Lehigh's Freshmen Eight placed 15th in its morning race (time of 6:16.31) to reach the semifinals, where it posted a time of 6:44.149 to advance to the third final on Saturday.

"Our Freshmen Eight had a little bit of a struggle in the middle of its race, but they able to collective themselves," said Conley. "The Varsity Eight had a tough semifinal, but found the speed to reach the petite final, which was better than where they were seeded."
Â
The Junior Varsity Eight (6:18.086) and Four (7:09.972) also rowed on Friday. The JV Eight advanced to the petite final while the JV Four qualified for the third final Saturday.

"For the JV Four, it came down to tenths of a second for them to make the petite final," said Conley. "They came up a little short. The JV Eight found themselves with some tough competition, but raced a really solid race from start to finish with very few mistakes. I couldn't be happier with how they've developed."

Lehigh's four crews are set to race on Saturday, beginning with the Varsity Eight at 7:10 a.m., Junior Varsity Eight at 8:40 a.m., Junior Varsity Four at 12:40 p.m. and Freshmen Eight at 1:05 p.m.

"We're here trying to get as much racing experience as possible for the program," said Conley. "Our Varsity Eight is here to set the standard for the program as we move forward."
