Lehigh Sweeps Lafayette to Open Series on Saturday

4/22/2017 6:51:00 PM | Baseball

EASTON, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks got back in the Patriot League win column and snapped a seven-game skid in league play with a Saturday doubleheader sweep over archrival Lafayette. Lehigh edged out the Leopards in game one by a final score of 3-2 before cruising to a 9-1 triumph in game two.

Seniors Connor Donovan and Jacen Nalesnik were the catalyst behind the Saturday sweep. Nalesnik played the role of hero in game one as his seventh inning solo homer broke a 2-2 tie and ultimately lifted Lehigh (14-24, 4-10) to victory. Donovan got things done on the mound and at the plate. He picked up the win in game one through 6.0 innings of work and broke open a nine-run lead in game two with his three-run home run in the fourth inning.

Donovan improves to 3-2 on the season in six starts as he surrendered just one earned run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts to earn the game one win. Ethan Frohman came in to close the seventh and earned his third save of the season has he held Lafayette (3-39, 1-13) to just one hit in his one complete inning of work.

Lehigh received a strong starting effort on the mound in game two from freshman Jason Reynolds. The 6-foot-3-inch righty stifled the Leopards as he tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits on his second-straight five-strikeout performance. Reynolds stumbled just once by loading the bases in the fifth, but worked out of the jam with minimal damage by allowing just one run. The seven-inning performance is the most thrown in a start this season by Reynolds as he improves to 3-4 in five starts.

Nalesnik led all players offensively as he went a combined 5-for-9 on the day, including the game-winning home run in the game one. The senior totaled two RBI and scored three runs on the day. Fellow senior Anthony Rinaldi had a strong return to the lineup coming off injury as he led Lehigh with a 3-for-3 performance in game one with one RBI.

The Mountain Hawks improve their current win streak to seven games over the Leopards. Lehigh has now earned at least a series split with Lafayette in every season since 2009.

Lehigh and Lafayette will finish the series on Sunday at Kamine Stadium with a 12 p.m. start time for game one.
