Lehigh recognized by NFHCA for academic success

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team was recognized for its outstanding work in the classroom on Wednesday as 10 Mountain Hawks were named to the Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad while freshman Amanda Boyer was named a Scholar of Distinction. Lehigh also garnered a National Academic Team Award for earning a cumulative GPA over 3.0 during the fall semester.

The National Academic Squad includes all student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the first semester of the 2016-17 academic year. Recognized for the Mountain Hawks were seniors Kassidy Green (a four-year member of National Academic Squad), Janelle High and Julia Ward, juniors Katie Morris, Jackie Renda and Julia Washburn, sophomore Lauren Dice and freshmen Amanda Boyer, Emma Coppock and Julia Ward.

The Scholars of Distinction list includes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or greater through the first semester of the 2016-17 academic year. Boyer made the list after posting a perfect 4.0 GPA this fall, her first semester at Lehigh.

The most recent awards continue a tradition of academic success within the program. Twelve Mountain Hawks were recently named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Renda was one of just five student-athletes in the league named All-Patriot League and Academic All-League.

Lehigh finished its 2016 season with five wins over its last eight games, highlighted by a four-game winning streak. The Mountain Hawks defeated eventual No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament Holy Cross, while staying alive in the race for the postseason right until the very end. Lehigh improved its final RPI by 13 spots, tied for the eighth largest improvement in the nation.
