BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team will make a trip to the Hudson Valley on Saturday to battle Army West Point in their final road game of the regular season. The Mountain Hawks currently sit in ninth place overall in the Patriot League standings, and can move up to eighth place by winning one of their two remaining games, coupled with two losses by Loyola (Md.).
Lehigh is coming off a five-point defeat on the road at Colgate on Wednesday night. After digging themselves an early 20-point hole, Lehigh outscored the Raiders 68-53 over the final 33 minutes of the game. Lehigh rallied and took a three-point lead late in the third quarter, but Colgate went on to outscore Lehigh 18-15 over the final 10 minutes and hold on for the 75-70 win.
Junior Mae Williams scored a career-high 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, and Quinci Mann tallied her 11th game this season with at least 20 points, while sinking five three-pointers. Sophomore Hailey Pascoe scored 14 points and tied a career-high with four triples as the Mountain Hawks tied their season-high with 12 three-pointers.
Army traveled to Boston on Wednesday and came away with a 64-52 win. Aliyah Murray led the Cadets with 13 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Madison Hovren, Janae McNeal and Destinee Morris also scored in double figures, to help lift Army to its fifth straight 20-win season, and the 11th overall in program history.
IF LEHIGH BEATS ARMY
- Lehigh would win in West Point for the first time in the regular season since Feb. 14, 2010.
ALL-TIME VS. ARMY
Lehigh enters the late-season Patriot League matchup holding a 30-32 record against Army in the all-time series between the two schools, with the Black Knights winning nine of the last 11 dating back to February 2013. The two programs have met three times in each of the last two seasons, with Lehigh winning twice during the 2014-15 season, including a 76-57 win at Army in the Patriot League semifinals on Mar. 9, 2015.
Army won the first 11 matchups in the all-time series between the two schools, with their first meeting coming in the 1983-84 season.
In last year's three matchups, Army outscored Lehigh by an average of 24.7 points (69.3-44.6). Janae McNeal averaged 10.7 pts, four rebounds and two assists per game against Lehigh, and Madison Hovren averaged 5.3 points and 3.7 rebounds to help lead Army's returners. Quinci Mann led Lehigh in the three games with 11.7 points on 42.4 percent shooting (14-for-33).
Army held off Lehigh back on Dec. 30 for a 75-71 win at Stabler Arena. Bernadette Devaney and Mann scored 13 points apiece and Cameryn Benz tallied 11 points as Lehigh shot 40.3 percent overall.
SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS
Army West Point enters the final weekend of the regular season in third place in the Patriot League at 20-7, 11-5 PL. A win on Saturday would clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
Army is tied for second in the Patriot League in scoring with 66.6 points per game this season, and ranks second in the league in several other categories including scoring defense (56.9), scoring margin, ( 9.7), three-point percentage (28.5), rebounding margin ( 4.9) and turnover margin ( 4.8).
The Black Knights average a league-leading 11.7 steals per game, which is also good enough for eighth-best in the country this season. The team ranks 19th nationally in turnovers forced (20.7), 13th in total steals (319) and is 34th in scoring defense (56.9).
Sophomore forward Madison Hovren is the only Patriot League player to average a double-double this season (18.6 ppg, 10.5 rpg), leading the league in both categories.
Janae McNeal is Army's second leading scorer with 9.3 ppg, and ranks third in the PL by collecting 2.1 steals per game. Diazjah Morris and Madison Hovren also average 2.1 steals per game and Aliyah Murray ranks seventh with an even 2.0 steals per contest. Hovren (46.4) and Murray (44.4) lead the team in field goal percentage, and Libby Tacka leads the team in 3FG% (min. 20 attempts) at 34.8 percent.
NOT ENOUGH THIS TIME
Lehigh's loss on Wednesday at Colgate was just the second this season when scoring at least 70 points, with the other coming in the Patriot League opener against Army on Dec. 30. Lehigh holds a 6-2 record in games this year where they have scored at least 70 points, and are 3-16 when scoring under 70, including a 1-7 mark when scoring in the 50's. Lehigh is averaging 76.2 points in their wins and 56.9 in their losses.
TIED THE HIGH
Lehigh's 12 made three-pointers at Colgate on Wednesday tied their season-high, which they previously set on Nov. 30 vs. NJIT. The Mountain Hawks have now hit 10 three-pointers on five different occasions this season.
QUINCI'S CONTINUES TO SCORE
Junior Quinci Mann scored a team-high 23 points at Colgate on Wednesday, marking the 11th time this season she has scored at least 20 points, and the fifth time she has registered at least 23 in a game. She tied her career-high with five made three-pointers, the second time she has registered that many in one game (12/6/15 at Illinois).
MAE DAY
Junior Mae Williams scored a career-high 10 points in Wednesday's game at Colgate, while also setting a career-high with seven field goal attempts. She is averaging 4.2 rebounds and is shooting 46.7 percent from the field over her last six games.
HOME COOKING
The Mountain Hawks boast a field goal percentage of 39.7 percent in 15 home games this season at Stabler Arena, but are shooting just 32.5 percent in their 12 road games. The trend is the same from three-point range, with the team shooting 35.8 percent at home (7.7 made 3FG/game), and 28.6 percent on the road (6.4 made 3FG/game).
GRUNDHOFFER MAKING STRIDES
Freshman Gena Grundhoffer has been a force for the Mountain Hawks over the last six games, scoring 11.8 points per contest and shooting 46.3 percent from the field. She is also 6-for-10 from beyond the arc and is collecting 4.2 rebounds per game in the last six games. She had the first 20-point game of her career on Feb. 11 against Holy Cross.
BUHR CONTINUES TO BLOOM
Over the last 11 games, freshman Camryn Buhr leads the Mountain Hawks with 5.6 rebounds and is third with 8.8 points per game. She is shooting 40.9 percent overall, and 40.9 percent from 3pt range over that span, while leading the team with 11 steals and six blocks, and is third with 13 assists. For the season, she has crept up to second on the team with 4.6 boards per game.
GETTING A BOOST ON THE BOARDS
The Mountain Hawks have outrebounded their opponents in six of their last 10 games overall, and own a rebounding margin of 0.6 during that stretch. Lehigh had previously been outrebounded in nine straight contests.
Lehigh ranks fourth in the Patriot League by collecting 37.3 rebounds per game, but comes in eighth/10 by allowing 40.2 boards per game. Overall, Lehigh's rebounding margin has been on the rise to -2.9 and is 7th in the PL. Lehigh has been outrebounded in 16 of its 27 games this season and holds a 2-14 record in those games.
HEDSTROM'S HELPING HANDS
Over the last 10 games, freshman point guard Hannah Hedstrom ranks second on the team with 5.2 rebounds and is dishing out 4.1 assists per game.
Hedstrom is currently fourth in the Patriot League by averaging 3.6 assists per game, and is third during league games with 4.0 assists per game. She is the only freshman ranked in the top 10 overall and is tied for the most assists in one game this season: nine against Delaware State on Nov. 16.
MANN REMAINS IN THE TOP 25
Junior Quinci Mann ranks 24th in the NCAA in free throw percentage at 86.9 percent, after climbing as high as No. 19 last week. If the season were to end today, her percentage would be ninth-best in Patriot League history since the league began keeping track of the stat during the 2000-01 season.
Mann set a new program record for made free throws in a game by going 16-for-16 from the line on Feb. 1 against Loyola, surpassing the previous Lehigh record of 13, held by Alexa Williams (2009) and Kelly Madden (1995). The mark was 10 shy of the Patriot League record of 26 (in 26 attempts) held by Army's Kelsey Minato (2014).
Her 16 made free throws is the second most in a single game in the Patriot League this season, and tied for ninth most in a single game in the nation.
