Lehigh Hosts Holy Cross Tuesday in Patriot League Quarterfinal

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks will be making their 17th Patriot League postseason appearance in the 26-year history of the league when they host Holy Cross Tuesday night at Ulrich Sports Complex in a quarterfinal round contest. The game will be streamed live for free on the Patriot League Network. Admission to the event is $5 for adults and $3 for youth (18 and under), students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at the Ulrich Sports Complex ticket window or in advance at lehightickets.com.

Lehigh (11-6-1, 5-3-1) enters the tournament as the fourth seed, while Holy Cross (6-8-3, 4-3-2) enters as the fifth seed and clinched its postseason berth with a 1-0 victory over Lehigh last Saturday in Worcester, Mass. in the regular season finale. The Mountain Hawks are 1-3-1 against this season's tournament field, while the Crusaders own a record 3-2-0 against the postseason qualifiers.

Lehigh will be making its first postseason appearance since winning the Patriot League title in 2015. That year, the Mountain Hawks also entered the tournament as the fourth seed and defeated No. 5 Bucknell, No. 1 Colgate and No. 3 American to capture the second league title in program history.

Holy Cross has not been in the Patriot League postseason since 2013. That year, the Crusaders entered as the third seed and advanced to the title game where they fell to Navy, 2-0. Holy Cross captured its only league title in 2002, defeating No. 4 Lafayette and No. 3 Lehigh on its path to the championship.

The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders have met twice in the Patriot League Tournament, with Lehigh owning a record of 1-0-1. LU defeated Holy Cross, 1-0, in 1997 to advance to the title game. After playing to a scoreless tie at the end of two overtime periods in the 2002 championship game, the Crusaders edged Lehigh, 10-9, in penalty kicks to capture the league title.

Tuesday's postseason tilt will feature nine players selected to the 2017 All-Patriot League team, including the Offensive Player of the Year. Mark Forrest headlines the group as a first-team honoree, in addition to garnering the league's top offensive honor. Doyle Tuvesson and Alex Greene join Forrest on the first team, while John Marc Charpentier and Holy Cross' Justin Carfora and Arno Rupp earned second-team selections. Stevo Bednarsky and Alex Greene represent Lehigh on the third team, while Yuji Callahan was the lone Crusader selected to the third team.

Lehigh owns the league's top offense, averaging just under two goals per game this season and is surrendering 1.33 goals per game for a 0.61 scoring margin. Holy Cross has averaged exactly 1.00 goals per game with a goals-against average of 1.59 for a -0.59 scoring margin.

Forrest leads all players in the league with 38 points and 15 goals, while Tuvesson is the league leader with 10 assists and ranks second with 20 points. Rupp paces Holy Cross with 16 points and is tied for third in the league with seven goals.

Will Smith has posted four clean sheets with a record of 10-5-1 on the season as the Lehigh backstop. He owns a goals-against average of 1.14 with a save percentage of .756 in nearly 1500 minutes of action. Henry Stutz has been the only keeper to see action for Holy Cross this season. He has five shutouts with a .679 save percentage and a 1.51 goals-against average in 1607:16 minutes.
