BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Yale took a quick 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game and wouldn't look back as the Mountain Hawks fell 7-1 on Sunday afternoon. In the defeat, freshman Drew Pecora scored for the second consecutive contest. Lehigh finished with 13 shots for the game, but just three were on goal. The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday when they host archrival Lafayette at 7 p.m.
Â
"We are really working on setting small goals moving into each game and today, I thought that our midfield play moving forward to attack was really strong," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "We had some great passing combinations and we had some phenomenal attacking looks. We need to make sure that we're being more disciplined when we get ourselves in attacking situations and we need to be more disciplined on defense."
Â
Yale's Anissa Abboud opened the scoring, putting home a rebound in the fourth minute following a save from freshman goalkeeper Emma Gromacki. Less than 90 seconds later, Carol Middough scored the first of her four goals on the afternoon. She scored the Bulldogs' second, third and fourth goals to give her side a 4-0 halftime advantage.
Â
Lehigh was strong coming out of halftime, recording the first three shots and first two penalty corners of the second half, and leading to a goal. After freshman Jenna Krause's initial shot was blocked, classmate Drew Pecora corralled the loose ball and Yale goalkeeper Sydney Terroso from right in front of the cage. The goal pulled Lehigh within 4-1 at the 40:04 mark.
Â
The Mountain Hawks finished the second half with a 10-6 edge in shots, but the Bulldogs took advantage of the shots they had. They went on to score three second-half goals, while the other three were stopped by Lehigh sophomore goalkeeper Paige Innarella. Yale's Imogen Davies rounded out the scoring at the 66:59 mark to account for the 7-1 final.
Â
"We allowed a lot of shots that we should not have allowed from critical areas in the circle," said Dallmeyer. "We gave them opportunities that they capitalized on. We need to be more disciplined moving forward."
Â
Final shots were 16-13 in favor of the Bulldogs while Lehigh held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Gromacki and Innarella made four saves apiece on the afternoon.
