Carotenuto’s golden goal lifts Lehigh to big 1-0 win over Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Teresa Carotenuto scored off a penalty corner with no time remaining in overtime, while sophomore goalkeeper Paige Innarella made 12 big saves, to lift the Lehigh field hockey team to a 1-0 win over archrival Lafayette on Friday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The win snapped the Mountain Hawks' 13-game losing streak against the Leopards, giving Lehigh its first win over Lafayette since 2005.
"For our team, we've been really working on trusting the process and understanding there are certain things that will get us to this point, which are accountability, discipline and making sure we're continuing to work our butts off every day at practice, knowing that this moment could come," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer.
Two seniors assisted Lehigh's goal as Jackie Renda fed Julia Washburn, whose stick stock preceded Carotenuto's blast from the top of the circle.
"We haven't beaten Lafayette in so long and it's something to be so proud of," said Renda. "The seniors wanted to leave everything on the field, and we did. This is the game I wanted to win more than anything in the world and I wasn't letting anything stop me, especially being tired. The whole team put forth a great effort, from the forwards to the defense to Paige in goal. We left it all on the field."
The shutout was Innarella's second of the season and third of her career while her 12 saves were just one from tying her career high (13 vs. Ohio State earlier this season). Lehigh's last win over Lafayette (Sept. 30, 2005) was also a 1-0 shutout victory.
Innarella stood tall all game long, making seven first-half saves to keep the teams scoreless at halftime.

The sides went back-and-forth in the second half as shots over the first 34 minutes of the stanza were tied at three. The Mountain Hawks' first shot on goal was a glittering opportunity as junior Isabel McKeown's quick shot in front was stopped by Lafayette goalkeeper Sarah Park, while Renda's rebound opportunity went wide.
In the final minute of regulation, Innarella made a save from in close as the Mountain Hawks successfully defended two late penalty corners to force overtime.
Lafayette tallied the first six shots of overtime, including consecutive shots in the 80th minute, but Innarella came up with two more big stops. After making the initial save on an Ellen Colburne attempt, Innarella leaped and found a way to get a stick on the rebound as well.
Lehigh's offense charged late in the overtime period, recording three shots over the final two minutes. On the Mountain Hawks' second consecutive penalty corner with no time remaining, Carotenuto rocketed a shot past Lafayette's Sarah Park to send Lehigh home winners.
"Before going into the game, we talked about the number of years it's been since we beat Lafayette and we talked about the number of athletes who've graduated from this program without a Lafayette win," said Dallmeyer. "We've got four in our senior class right now and throughout the game, at halftime, before the game and during the game, we kept saying not four more. Don't let it be four more. I could not be more proud that we will not be adding four more to that list."
Final shots were 20-7 in favor of Lafayette. Park made three saves, across Innarella's dazzling 12-save performance.
Lehigh will now head to Lock Haven next Saturday (Oct. 14) before hosting Georgetown on Sunday (Oct. 15). Both games will begin at 1 p.m.
"Our senior class is something special - leadership wise, work ethic wise and discipline wise," said Dallmeyer. "They really embody the accountability and the discipline that we have continued to preach throughout this season. They've done a great job of showing up every day, really believing in this program and being proud to be a Lehigh field hockey team member. For them to walk away with this win, it's emotional and it's a huge celebration in their hearts knowing that everything they've put in day-in-and-day out has paid off."
