Lehigh Returns Home Wednesday for Patriot League Matchup with Loyola

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's basketball team returns to Stabler Arena this Wednesday evening to take on Loyola (Md.). The game serves as the second meeting between the two schools this year, with Loyola holding on for a four-point, 62-58 win back on January 5 down in Baltimore.

In their first meeting, after being outscored 39-22 and committing 11 turnovers in the opening half, the Mountain Hawks outscored Loyola 36-23 in the second half and turned the ball over on just four occasions. Three Mountain Hawks scored in double figures, led by junior Quinci Mann who had 16 points and six rebounds. Freshman Gena Grundhoffer added 14 points and six boards and was 8-of-9 from the free throw line, and freshman Hannah Hedstrom scored 10 points to go with two assists. The Greyhounds had big performances from freshman Stephanie Karcz (14 rebounds, 5 steals) and junior Bri Betz-White who each scored 19 points, plus Lauren Daugherty who had 12 points and five rebounds.

Lehigh is coming off a 64-50 setback at Boston U. on Saturday, where they committed a season-high 24 turnovers and shot just under 24 percent from the second quarter on. The Mountain Hawks did outrebound the Terriers by 10, while BU held a 38-14 edge in the paint.

Loyola has registered back-to-back wins over Colgate and Lafayette, and has a signature league win over Army, while suffering setbacks to Navy, Bucknell and Boston University. In Saturday's 75-47 win over Lafayette, Karcz had 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals on 7-of-8 shooting.

The Mountain Hawks hold an 8-5 record all-time against the Greyhounds, including a 4-3 mark since Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013-14.

The Greyhounds topped the Mountain Hawks by four in their meeting back on Jan. 5, ending Lehigh's three-game winning streak against Loyola, which at the time was Lehigh's longest active winning streak against another Patriot League team.

The Mountain Hawks are 5-1 against Loyola in games played at Stabler Arena. On average, Lehigh has outscored Loyola 70-57.8 in games played at Stabler.

Last season, Lehigh swept the season series with scores of 66-48 at Stabler Arena and 76-68 at Reitz Arena. Departed senior Lexi Martins led Lehigh in both wins with 17 points and 18 rebounds on Jan. 6, 2016 while Quinci Mann led the returners with 10 points. Kerry Kinek also had a strong game for Lehigh, picking up a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bernadette Devaney tallied 11 points and three assists in the second matchup on Feb. 3, 2016.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
Loyola enters Wednesday's matchup at 9-11 overall, and 5-4 through the first half of Patriot League play. The Greyhounds are coming off back-to-back double-digit wins over Colgate and Lafayette, and are 4-1 against teams currently ranked in the bottom half of the league's standings.

Loyola ranks third in the Patriot League in turnover margin ( 1.7) and fourth in rebounding margin (-0.8). They average an even 61 points per game this season, and 63.9 ppg in league play, both of which rank seventh in the PL.

Junior guard Bri Betz-White has moved up to second this week in the league in scoring with 16.1 ppg. Lauren Daughterty is second on the team in ppg (9.6) and rebounds (5.7). Freshman Stephanie Karcz leads the squad with 6.2 rebounds/game and is averaging 9.3 ppg. She has been named the league's Rookie of the Week three times, tied for the most ROW awards in the league this season.

Karcz tormented the Mountain Hawks back on January 5, putting up 19 points, 14 rebounds and five steals en route to being named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week. Betz-White added 19 points of her own on 6-of-15 shooting. Daugherty also scored in double figures by adding 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals.

IN THE LAST 15
Lehigh has lost 13 of its last 15 games dating back to Nov. 26 against Norfolk State. The last time the Mountain Hawks were in this position was during the 1994-95 season.

NO REASON TO BOO-HER
Freshman Camryn Buhr has been a driving force for the Mountain Hawks over the last three games. During that span, she leads the team with 12.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest. On Saturday at BU, she was the only Mountain Hawk to score in double figures with 12 points and tied her career-high with nine rebounds.

She scored a career-high 15 points against Navy with two steals and her first career-three pointer, while adding eight rebounds. She scored nine points in a row during the third quarter, helping to tie the game and take the lead after being down by 18 points.

In LU's win at Lafayette, she continued the momentum by tallying 11 points and six rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting.

LOOKING FOR THE BASKET
After averaging 66.5 points per game through the non-league portion of the schedule, Lehigh has averaged 57.7 points through the first nine games of their Patriot League schedule. The Mountain Hawks topped 65 points six times through the 11-game non-league schedule, but have scored 60 only three times through their first nine PL games.

BERN BABY BERN!
Junior Bernadette Devaney was sizzling hot in two games against Navy and Lafayette on Jan. 18-21, shooting 7-for-9 (77.8%) overall, including 7-for-8 (87.5%) from three point range. She averaged 11.5 points and two rebounds in 24.5 minutes over the two games. She currently ranks sixth in the Patriot League in three-point percentage at 43.4 percent.

INCHING CLOSER TO THE MILESTONE
Quinci Mann enters Wednesday's game with 948 career points, just 52 shy of becoming the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 points for her career. She is averaging 15.1 points per game this season, good enough for fourth in the Patriot League.

SEEING DOUBLE
On January 21 at Lafayette, Lehigh had four players score in double figures for just the second time this season. The other instance was on Nov. 16 against Delaware State. Lehigh was victorious in both matchups.

SERVING THEM UP
Freshman point guard Hannah Hedstrom is currently sixth in the Patriot League by averaging 3.4 assists per game. During league play, Hedstrom ranks third in the PL with 4.0 assists per game. She is the only freshman ranked in the top 10 overall and is tied for the most assists in one game this season: nine against Delaware State on Nov. 16.

HALFTIME SIGNS
Lehigh holds a 2-12 record this year when trailing at halftime, with their wins coming against Delaware State on (11/16) and Lafayette (1/21). Their only defeat when winning at halftime this year came on Jan. 2 vs. Boston U. The Mountain Hawks are 0-1 when tied at the half (Army).
Lehigh is also a mere 2-11 when losing the rebounding battle, with the one win coming over Delaware State.

THE BIG QUARTER
Lehigh is the only team in the Patriot League to have allowed 30 points in a single quarter this season. This feat that has happened twice - the first quarter at Duquesne on Nov. 13 (30), and the fourth quarter against Boston University on Jan. 4 (37).
On the flip side, three Patriot League teams have scored 30 in a quarter this season: American (30) vs. UMBC, Army West Point (32) vs. Mercy, and Boston University (37) at Lehigh.

Lehigh holds a 4-1 record in games this year where they have scored at least 70 points, with the only setback coming to Army West Point. They are 2-13 when scoring under 70, including a 1-5 mark when scoring in the 60's. Lehigh is averaging 75.1 points in their wins and 57.1 in their losses.

Lehigh ranks fourth in the Patriot League by collecting 38.7 rebounds per game, but comes in 10th/10 by allowing 42.0 boards per game.
